(Why not <strong>Nevada<\/strong>, we ask?) Although its odds have narrowed significantly, <em>The Power of the Dog<\/em> (<strong>DraftKings<\/strong> -280\/<strong>BetMGM<\/strong> -250) is still the picture to beat. If you feel like playing long shots (and we&#8217;re not talking about hopelessly out-of-it ones like +8,000 <em>Nightmare Alley<\/em>), there&#8217;s a serious chance the Academy could go with predictable <em>CODA<\/em> (+400\/+450), which has usurped <em>Belfast<\/em>&#8216;s feel-good mojo, moving way, way up from +2,500 (<em>Belfast<\/em>: +650\/+600). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CODA \u2014 Official Trailer | Apple TV+\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0pmfrE1YL4I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>&#8220;Apple: Television for Oscars&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Proudly mediocre, <em>CODA<\/em> is the best Lifetime Channel Original Movie ever made but Oscar voters could split the ticket much as they did when they anointed mushy <em>The Green Book<\/em> over Best Director\/Best International Film winner <em>Roma<\/em>. At this point, <em>Power of the Dog<\/em> writer\/director <strong>Jane Campion<\/strong> remains a prohibitive (-3,500\/-3,000) favorite to take home the Best Director prize, besting <em>Belfast<\/em>&#8216;s <strong>Kenneth Branagh<\/strong> (+1,400\/+1,400) and sentimental choice <strong>Steven Spielberg<\/strong> (+2,000\/+1,200), who&#8217;s forsaking cinemas for streaming services after <em>West Side Story<\/em>. If there&#8217;s any movement toward an upset in this category it&#8217;s <em>Licorice Pizza<\/em> helmer <strong>Paul Thomas Anderson<\/strong>, tiptoeing up to +2,000\/+3,300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Best Actress is a tough call. Should-win candidate <strong>Jessica Chastain<\/strong> is riding the momentum of the <strong>SAG Awards<\/strong> and <strong>Critics Choice Awards<\/strong> to a leading -150\/-165 for <em>The Eyes of Tammy Faye<\/em>. <strong>Nicole Kidman<\/strong> (<em>Being the Ricardos,<\/em> +250\/+300) and <strong>Olivia Colman<\/strong> (<em>The Lost Daughter<\/em>, +500\/+600) have strong candidacies that landed them a <strong>Golden Globe<\/strong> and <strong>Independent Spirit Award<\/strong> respectively. But they&#8217;ve won Oscars already, which could work against them. If you want to bet on a stomach-churning long shot, there&#8217;s <strong>Kristen Stewart<\/strong>, unintelligible as <strong>Princess Diana<\/strong> in the somnolent <em>Spencer<\/em> (+500\/+700). <strong>Penelope Cruz<\/strong> (<em>Parallel Mothers<\/em>) deserves better than her +1,600\/+2,500 odds would indicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE | Official Trailer | Searchlight Pictures\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eMMLRnXPPJk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It would take an upset of monumental proportions to unseat <strong>Will Smith<\/strong> from <em>King Richard<\/em>&#8216;s throne (-800\/-1,000). Smith&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.covers.com\/entertainment\/academy-awards-oscars-odds\">run the table this awards season<\/a> so why stop now? <strong>Benedict Cumberbatch<\/strong> (<em>The Power of the Dog<\/em>, +450\/+500) and <strong>Andrew Garfield<\/strong> (<em>tick &#8230; tick &#8230; BOOM!<\/em>, +1,100\/+1,400) have been touted as possible upset candidates but we don&#8217;t like their odds. For <strong>Denzel Washington<\/strong> (<em>The Tragedy of Macbeth<\/em>, +2,500\/+5,000) and <strong>Javier Bardem<\/strong> (<em>Being the Ricardos<\/em>, +4,000\/+5,000) being nominated <em>was<\/em> the real honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other categories, <em>CODA<\/em>&#8216;s <strong>Troy Kotsur<\/strong> has come from behind to be the expected winner of the Best Supporting Actor statuette and nothing has budged <em>West Side Story<\/em>&#8216;s <strong>Ariana DeBos<\/strong>e from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vegasinsider.com\/awards\/odds\/oscars\/\">presumptive-winner status<\/a> as Best Supporting Actress. <em>CODA<\/em> has also elbowed aside <em>Power of the Dog<\/em> as favorite for Best Adapted Screenplay (blech!), which it could get as a consolation prize in lieu of Best Picture\u2014or harbinger of an upset, while Paul Thomas Anderson seems to have an overdue Oscar locked down for Original Screenplay for <em>Licorice Pizza<\/em>, with only <em>Belfast<\/em> a serious odds rival. The only other possible upset of consequence is Best Documentary Feature, where <em>Flee<\/em> (BetMGM: +230) is creeping up on good-vibe <em>Summer of Soul<\/em> (-300), although we&#8217;d give it to the utterly shattering <em>Attica<\/em> (+1,000), which sadly does not seem to have picked up any momentum from its <strong>Directors Guild Awards<\/strong> triumph.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With one week until the Academy Awards, you still have time to get your money down in New Jersey and Indiana.
