On hand were <strong>Allen Iverson<\/strong>, a marching band, a gaggle of local politicians &#8230; and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CasinoSmokefree\/status\/1617971428237905921?s=20&amp;t=Okg630Tzm3UpM4GnOQA7zQ\">the noxious odor<\/a> of tobacco smoke. Comments harvested by <strong>Americans for Nonsmokers Rights<\/strong> included such gems as &#8220;This is just not OK&#8221; and &#8220;I will never come here again.&#8221; That&#8217;s not what <strong>Rush Street Gaming<\/strong> execs want to hear, less stil, &#8220;I think it&#8217;s backwards, archaic, disgusting and I won&#8217;t come here ever again.&#8221; Opined player <strong>Beth Grimes<\/strong>,\u00a0\u201cI hadn\u2019t even sat down yet to play a game. I\u2019m leaving. I\u2019ve been in this building 30 minutes walking around, and all of a sudden, as more people have come in and sat down, they\u2019re smoking, smoking, smoking.\u201d Also irked was <strong>Norfolk<\/strong> resident <strong>David Spry<\/strong>: &#8220;I finally quit and I&#8217;m not going to be putting myself into a position where I\u2019m going to get second-hand smoke.&#8221; Nor should he.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Rush Street&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtkr.com\/news\/rivers-casino-portsmouth-hosts-grand-opening-ribbon-cutting-ceremony\">failure to &#8216;read the room&#8217;<\/a> is indicative of a &#8220;backwards, archaic&#8221; mentality in the C-suite. The execs fell back on their HVAC system, asserting that it would negate the smoke through its magic &#8220;ventilation centers.&#8221; We&#8217;ve never been in a casino where air filtration banished the odor of smoke, so pardon our skepticism. The closest anyone came was the <strong>Aria<\/strong> slot floor\u2014at the price of an inflexible game layout. As ANR President <strong>Cynthia Hallett<\/strong> says, &#8220;It\u2019s telling that local residents are already speaking out against indoor smoking at the new casino. It\u2019s time to end this outdated business practice. After all, research shows that casinos without indoor smoking generate more revenue than their smoking counterparts.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"290\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Motor-City.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Motor-City.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Motor-City-150x102.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> of <strong>J.P. Morgan<\/strong> didn&#8217;t bring along any 2021 comparisons when he busted out the December revenues for <strong>Detroit<\/strong>&#8216;s casinos. We&#8217;ll have to make to with (outdated) 2019 measurements\u2014and they&#8217;re not auspicious. The trio of gambling halls grossed $108 million and even <strong>MGM Grand Detroit<\/strong> wasn&#8217;t immune from an 8% revenue decline to $51 million. It was much worse at <strong>Hollywood Greektown<\/strong>, falling 19% to $24 million, leaving $33 million for <strong>MotorCity<\/strong> (no comparison provided). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internet casinos nearly outperformed terrestrial ones, grossing $108 million, led by <strong>BetMGM<\/strong> ($54.5 million) and <strong>DraftKings<\/strong> at $32 million. Close behind was <strong>FanDuel<\/strong> ($29 million), but not <strong>BetRivers <\/strong>($9.5 million) or <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> ($7 million), let alone <strong>WynnBet<\/strong> ($5 million) and <strong>Barstool Sports<\/strong> ($4 million). In the sports betting sector, revenue of $49 million was realized, although that dwindled to $31 million after promotions were deducted. Handle was $479 million. FanDuel dominated market share with 43% of revenue to BetMGM&#8217;s 23% and DraftKings&#8217; 18%. <strong>Caesars Sportsbook<\/strong> had 7% and Barstool 3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/walter-white-money-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/walter-white-money-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/walter-white-money-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/walter-white-money-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/walter-white-money.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Is <strong>Fanatics<\/strong> CEO <strong>Michael Rubin<\/strong> wacko or realistic? He predicts his brand-new sports books will be in &#8220;15 to 20 states&#8221; by next <strong>NFL <\/strong>season. That&#8217;s mighty ambitious and puts a great deal of pressure on regulators to approve the company to meet Mr. Rubin&#8217;s frenetic timeline. As <em>Legal Sports Report<\/em> puts the matter, &#8220;its full roll-out map is a mystery.&#8221; BetFanatics has gone live in <strong>Maryland<\/strong> and vows to be up and running in <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> by March. To get into <strong>Michigan<\/strong>, which is fully booked, Rubin may try to buy <strong>BetParx<\/strong>, which is among the low-hanging fruit of the industry. Moreover, there are eight states in which licenses have gone begging, so Rubin can get most of the way toward his goal, regulators permitting, if not necessarily by September.  Rubin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalsportsreport.com\/83139\/where-could-fanatics-sportsbook-launch-in-2023\/\" class=\"broken_link\">is banking on cheaper costs of entry<\/a> as well as the evolution of markets like the <strong>District of Columbia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rubin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playusa.com\/fanatics-all-in-with-sports-betting\/\" class=\"broken_link\">decidedly dicey business plan<\/a> is to leverage its mammoth apparel database into the number-one sports betting platform in America by 2032. (DraftKings and other first-movers might have something to say about that.) Oh, and make a profit, hopefully, something that only FanDuel has been able to achieve. \u201cI would love to see their plan for how they\u2019re going to make money,&#8221; <strong>Oklahoma State University<\/strong> business professor <strong>John Holden<\/strong> told <strong>Steve Friess<\/strong>. &#8220;And you don\u2019t make the margins on sports betting that you make on selling the jerseys or other collectible things that Fanatics sells. It\u2019s a highly competitive market and the market is pretty saturated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fanatics, which is sitting on $2 billion in cash, mainly plans to throw money at the problem. Can Fanatics succeed where <strong>Twin Spires<\/strong>, <strong>Fubo Sportsbook<\/strong>, <strong>MaximBet<\/strong> and others have failed? History inclines one to say &#8216;no&#8217; but Rubin is giving it considerably more than the old college try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Bad news at <strong>Bally&#8217;s Corp<\/strong>. The company is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playillinois.com\/ballys-laying-off-15-of-employees\/\" class=\"broken_link\">pink-slipping 15% of its employees<\/a>. Speculation has it that the brunt will fall on <strong>BallyBet<\/strong>, which has shown signs of overextension. Confessed CEO <strong>Lee Fenton<\/strong>, possibly laying the groundwork for his own exit, \u201cThe pandemic boosted our business and we continued to hire at full pelt. I now can see that we may have over-hired in some areas and I take full responsibility for that.\u201d We&#8217;re completely unsurprised, especially after <a href=\"https:\/\/cdcgaming.com\/ballys-cautious-as-profits-thin\/\">an incredibly depressing earnings call<\/a> last November. The company remains creakily over-leveraged (9X EBITDA) with only a pittance of cash on hand.
