Only dozens? That&#8217;s not a good sign for <strong>Bally&#8217;s Corp<\/strong>. It&#8217;ll need to stir up a lot more excitement than that if it&#8217;s to make back its nut on $1.7 billion <strong>Bally&#8217;s Chicago<\/strong>. If Chicagoans couldn&#8217;t be bothered to get out of bed for the 8 a.m. debut of a casino conveniently located at <strong>Medinah Temple<\/strong>, what does that bode for the megaresort, three years hence? Then again, nobody ever went broke with customers like the gullible group of gamblers who exclaimed, \u201cWe\u2019re seniors \u2026 We\u2019re in there to get this money.\u201d Still, the images of the early morning opening <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2023\/9\/9\/23865521\/chicago-casino-opening-ballys\">were distinctly underwhelming<\/a>. We expected better, frankly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s plenty of time for improvement. Bally&#8217;s rushed into the opening with &#8220;little fanfare&#8221; and no time for promotion. There was no date certain for the curtain-raising and, for now, Bally&#8217;s will have to rely upon word of mouth. Maybe when the permanent casino is licensed, <strong>Soo Kim<\/strong>&#8216;s company can take a week afterward to get its promotional ducks in a row. By now, casino companies should be accustomed to dancing attendance upon the schedule of <strong>Illinois<\/strong> regulators. Bally&#8217;s is no stranger to the Land of Lincoln, so what&#8217;s its excuse?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There was, however,&#8221; chronicled the <em>Chicago Sun Times<\/em>, &#8220;an early indication of the possible congestion issues posed by the house of chance in the heart of a busy tourist district. <strong>Carolyn Williams<\/strong>, the fourth person in line, said she had trouble finding a parking garage open that early, and was miffed to learn it wasn\u2019t free.&#8221; That seems a bit naive of Ms. Williams but we did warn that this sort of issue was likely to be exacerbated by the presence of a casino in the area. The greater naivet\u00e9 may be that of city fathers who think a casino, any casino, will be sufficiently bountiful to restore &#8221;&nbsp;nearly insolvent police and firefighter pension funds.&#8221; They&#8217;re in for a rude awakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Harrahs-KCWebOct2012.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12050\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Casinos in <strong>Missouri<\/strong> grossed $156.5 million last month, a 3% dip from last year, as an overheated regional industry continues to cool somewhat. Gamblers tightened their purse strings by 2% and attended very slightly less. <strong>Hollywood St. Louis<\/strong> ($20 million) continued to gain ground on <strong>Ameristar St. Charles<\/strong> ($23 million), which sagged -12%. <strong>River City<\/strong> was flat at $20.5 million and <strong>Horseshoe St. Louis<\/strong> lost its winning streak, -6% to $13 million. To the west, <strong>Ameristar Kansas City<\/strong> led that market with $16 million (flat), while <strong>Bally&#8217;s Kansas City<\/strong> continued to gain market share, up 5.5% to $11 million. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s North Kansas City<\/strong> (<em>pictured<\/em>) slid 8% to $14 million and <strong>Argosy Riverside<\/strong> stumbled 7% to $14 million. Outstate, <strong>Isle of Capri Boonville<\/strong> grossed $7.5 million, ceding a percentage point. <strong>Century Casinos<\/strong> improved in both its markets, jumping 7.5% in <strong>Caruthersville<\/strong> ($4 million) and 10% in <strong>Cape Girardeau<\/strong> ($6 million). In sports betting &#8230; wait &#8230; Missouri don&#8217;t have <a href=\"https:\/\/cdcgaming.com\/brief\/after-legislators-fail-to-pass-a-bill-petitions-filed-to-let-missouri-voters-decide-on-sports-betting\/\">no stinkin&#8217; sports betting<\/a>. Never had it. One Sin City mom finds herself having to make <a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2023\/sep\/07\/las-vegas-strip-workers-air-f1-related-constructio\/\" class=\"broken_link\">a three-hour commute<\/a> to work. \u201cI have to be two hours early to work and be two hours late to get out. Even though we wanted this Formula One race, it\u2019s difficult taking care of four kids and our life for work. All the people working [on] <strong>Las Vegas Boulevard<\/strong> coming into work, it is very difficult for us,\u201d <strong>Fdil Ismail<\/strong> told the <strong>Clark County Commission<\/strong>. She needn&#8217;t have bothered. The commissioners are bought and paid for by <strong>F1<\/strong>, which ought consider changing its name to FU. It handwaved the parking problem for <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>-based employees but &#8220;couldn\u2019t yet tell commissioners where those lots would be, or how workers would access the Strip.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least Commissioner <strong>Marilyn Kirkpatrick<\/strong> hasn&#8217;t forgotten her constitutents. As she told <strong>Las Vegas Grand Prix <\/strong>brass, \u201cThere\u2019s a lot riding on this, right? One, our brand because our brand means something, that\u2019s why you\u2019re here and we can\u2019t have it go bad either. But two, our employees live here and they\u2019re a part of the community and they can make or break you.\u201d And the way things are going, it&#8217;s looking a lot like &#8220;break.&#8221; County and race officials are offering <a href=\"https:\/\/cdcgaming.com\/brief\/monorail-may-be-key-for-las-vegas-resort-workers-during-f1-race\/\">bleak comfort<\/a> for the hoi polloi in the form of the quasi-mothballed <strong>Las Vegas Monorail<\/strong>, which will operate around the clock. (Will its usurious ticket prices be discounted?) That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/sports\/motor-sports\/formula-1\/monorail-may-be-key-transportation-option-for-resort-workers-during-f1-race-2899576\/\">still means quite a hike<\/a> for the rank and file. There&#8217;s even loose, last-minute talk of a temporary auto bridge at <strong>Flamingo Road<\/strong> and <strong>Koval Lane<\/strong>. No sweat, with 75 days to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"423\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/las-vegas-monorail.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1995\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/las-vegas-monorail.jpg 423w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/las-vegas-monorail-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/las-vegas-monorail-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to not only allow our spectators movement around to the different activation zones, we got to make sure that every shift has the ability to understand how they can move in and out of this area,\u201d remarked consultant <strong>Terry Miller<\/strong>, pushing workers under the race car and making sure it was clear who Priority Number One is (spectators). To that end, a beautiful, 25-year-old line of trees in front of <strong>Bellagio<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cdcgaming.com\/brief\/critics-balk-as-trees-cut-down-in-front-of-bellagio-to-make-way-for-f1-grandstands\/\">is being levele<\/a>d to make way for Grand Prix grandstands. That&#8217;s Vegas for you, destroying permanent beauty for a quick monetary hit. As tourist <strong>Sharlene Labore<\/strong> told <strong>Howard Stutz<\/strong>, &nbsp;\u201cGreed kills. And it just killed a bunch of trees because, let&#8217;s face it, they&#8217;re making a lot of money from the race coming here.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you think the Bellagio promenade <a href=\"https:\/\/thenevadaindependent.com\/article\/critics-balk-as-trees-cut-down-in-front-of-bellagio-to-make-way-for-f1-grandstands\">looks fugly now<\/a>, just wait &#8217;til the grandstand goes up. Bleah! <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtrlguy\/status\/1699635500938912154?s=20\">which wielded the axe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/travelzork.com\/vegas-news-november-15-2022-lotus-of-siam\/\" class=\"broken_link\">claims<\/a> that some of the trees will return. And if you believe that, boy, can we get you a deal on the <strong>Brooklyn Bridge<\/strong>. If you want to reproach the tree murderers, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/tell-mgm-resorts-to-stop-cutting-down-trees-in-las-vegas?signed=true\">an online petition<\/a> whereby you can do so. Kudos to <strong>Scott Roeben<\/strong> of <em>Vital Vegas<\/em> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.casino.org\/vitalvegas\/bellagio-hacks-down-trees-to-make-way-for-f1-grandstand\/\">blowing the whistle<\/a> on MGM&#8217;s anti-arboreal &#8220;horseshit&#8221; as he called it. He also reports, &#8220;The rates of rooms during the races are imploding, along with package prices.&#8221; He found a 69% (you read that right) markdown at <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Las Vegas<\/strong>. Sigh!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So much for <strong>Wall Street<\/strong>&#8216;s untethered-to-reality contention that the Las Vegas Grand Prix would be <em>even bigger than the the Super Bowl!<\/em> Dry your panties, stock pickers. Nothing is bigger than the <strong>Super Bowl<\/strong>. Analyst-for-hire <strong>Jeremy Aguero<\/strong> was evasive when <em>Las Vegas Advisor <\/em>asked him about his Formula One projections and now we know why. As Roeben zings, &#8220;The <em>Titanic<\/em> didn\u2019t pan out as planned, but at least it resulted in a popular movie, so every dark cloud has a silver lining.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stupidty doesn&#8217;t stop with tree homicide. Evidently, race organizers are afraid that the term &#8220;paddock&#8221; is so arcane (hell, every horse track in America has one) that people will think theirs is <a href=\"https:\/\/cdcgaming.com\/brief\/formula-1-to-change-building-name-to-avoid-1-october-shooter-affiliation\/\">a cockamamie tribute<\/a> to October 1 mass murderer\u2014and MGM special guest\u2014<strong>Stephen Paddock<\/strong>. Solution? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/sports\/motor-sports\/formula-1\/formula-1-to-change-building-name-to-avoid-1-october-shooter-affiliation-2899481\/\">Rename it something else<\/a>. No bright ideas have emerged yet, so the field is open to your suggestions. We&#8217;ll forward them to F1. Promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Self-exclusion from <strong>Nevada<\/strong> casinos? We didn&#8217;t think there was any such thing when ace reporter <strong>Dana Gentry<\/strong> rang us up about it. Turns out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevadacurrent.com\/2023\/09\/11\/nevadas-lack-of-casino-self-exclusion-law-par-for-state-say-experts\/\" class=\"broken_link\">we were right<\/a>. Gentry tells the story so we don&#8217;t have to. But it&#8217;s an outrage nonetheless. It was originally supposed to debut in 2025 &#8230; <strong>New York State<\/strong> Gov. <strong>Kathy Hochul<\/strong> (D), despite personal ties to the gaming industry, is wading back into talks with the <strong>Seneca Nation<\/strong> over a new compact.
