{"id":3669,"date":"2010-06-03T11:15:59","date_gmt":"2010-06-03T19:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=3669"},"modified":"2021-04-02T03:57:11","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T11:57:11","slug":"i-stand-corrected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/i-stand-corrected\/","title":{"rendered":"I stand corrected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kudos to the reader who caught my boo-boo regarding casinos built over interstate highways:<\/p>\n<p><em>Regarding a U.S. casino sitting astride a highway, please note that <strong>John Ascuaga&#8217;s Nugget<\/strong> in <strong>Sparks<\/strong> (outside of <strong>Reno<\/strong>) sits astride <strong>Interstate 80<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to say some nice things about <em>S&amp;G<\/em> my <em>Strip Podcast<\/em> guest shots, which was awfully kind. I will readily confess to never having been in Sparks. I did spend a couple of days in Reno <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/JN-Nugget-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/JN-Nugget-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/JN-Nugget-150x117.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/JN-Nugget.jpg 359w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>once (great city, BTW) but didn&#8217;t make it out to the legendary Nugget, which was regarded at the time &#8212; 1999 &#8212; as being one of the best-marketed casinos in the industry. As for the Nugget&#8217;s unusual &#8212; and very advantageous &#8212; positioning, I can only echo the late, great <strong>Johnny Carson<\/strong> and say, &#8220;I did not <em>know<\/em> that.&#8221; I stupidly figured that some tightass in D.C. would have thrown a fit about sinful gambling being conducted atop a sacrosanct federal highway and that would be the end of that. Like I always say, you learn (or should learn) something new every day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Customer 1, Ruffin 0<\/strong>. Finally, a <strong>Treasure Island<\/strong> guest fought The Man and won. Yes, somebody actually refused to pay one of those onerous &#8220;resort fees&#8221;<!--more--> and persuaded his credit card provider to agree with him. Among the alleged &#8220;value&#8221; items, I would question whether the <em>Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/em> is worth a dollar a day but the best one is, &#8220;<em>Access to VIP viewing area for Sirens of TI: Priceless<\/em>!&#8221; In any event, <strong>George Lilley<\/strong>, you are inspiration to all of us.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1927\" title=\"gibbons_dennis_hmed_10a.h2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/gibbons_dennis_hmed_10a.h2-150x117.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/gibbons_dennis_hmed_10a.h2-150x117.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/gibbons_dennis_hmed_10a.h2-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/gibbons_dennis_hmed_10a.h2.jpg 351w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Midnight Jim concedes<\/strong>. Yup, we&#8217;re less than a week from the primary and Gov. <strong>Jim Gibbons<\/strong> &#8212; who hopes to transition into being <strong>Cowboy Jim<\/strong> &#8212; is basically throwing in the towel to former Nevada Gaming Commissioner <strong>Brian Sandoval<\/strong>. (Being 22 points down in the polls and <a href=\"http:\/\/polltracker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/polls\/7196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">despised by the electorate<\/a> will do that to you.) Win or lose, Midnight Jim&#8217;s June 8 agenda remains the same: <em>Par-tay<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tipping point?<\/strong> An <em>S&amp;G<\/em> &#8220;Quote of the Day&#8221; that &#8220;outed&#8221; some gay-baiting rhetoric in a <strong>Nevada<\/strong> state Senate race <a href=\"http:\/\/slashpolitics.lvcitylife.com\/2010\/06\/a-cheat-sheet-for-nv-politicians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">continues to ricochet through the media<\/a> weeks later. So does mean if <strong>Kathy McClain<\/strong> loses on June 8 that I&#8217;m taking credit for it? Totally, man. I gotta have <em>something<\/em> to brag about this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>St. Louis quickie<\/strong>. Analysts from <strong>J.P. Morgan<\/strong> toured at least two of <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s three <strong>St. Louis<\/strong> properties and expect <strong>River City<\/strong> to exceed <strong>Lumiere Place<\/strong> as a revenue-generator. However, there&#8217;s some upside for Lumiere, as its hotel occupancies are rising and the negative-cash-flow albatross that is the neighboring <strong>President<\/strong> will be jettisoned when it is decommissioned on July 1.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s still $25 million of unfinished capex at <strong>River City<\/strong>, though, including an as-yet-unbuilt parking garage. (Say <em>what<\/em>?)
