It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktnv.com\/Global\/story.asp?S=12834233\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">the hazmat situation<\/a> brought on by the careless handling of chemicals. Chlorine was pumped into an acid tank, causing respiratory irritation, a few hospitalizations &#8212; a no doubt a couple of personal-injury lawsuits. Good going, Station.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking of lawsuits<\/strong>, one just hit the Cosmopolitan. A handful of condo buyers allege that their units <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/U\/US_COSMOPOLITAN_LAWSUITS?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">are being cannibalized<\/a> for hotel rooms. Nothing doing, says Cosmo management.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4112\" title=\"MBS_images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MBS_images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MBS_images.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MBS_images-150x98.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Watch out, Macao<\/strong>. Better commissions for VIP junket operators are likely to result in an increase of <strong>Singapore<\/strong> visitation by travelers from <strong>China<\/strong> (who already comprise 17% of the Singaporean tourist base, if one includes <strong>Taiwan<\/strong>). Protestations by <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> to the contrary, it may indeed find itself siphoning off some its Macao business to ramp up <strong>Marina Bay Sands<\/strong>. In fact, a spokesman for the latter says, &#8220;<em>With its growing middle class population,  China is an attractive market for us. We consciously cater to the needs  of Chinese guests<\/em>.&#8221;That&#8217;s not an inherent policy contradiction because &#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The city-state also provides a welcome haven for Mainland gamblers who chafe at visa restrictions to Macao, as well as for governmental officials who are prohibited &#8212; sometimes with good reason &#8212; from placing bets in Macanese casinos. <em>China Daily<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/china\/2010-07\/20\/content_11021474.htm\" target=\"_blank\">provides a helpful pair of pie charts<\/a> which draw a huge and striking contrast between the tourist makeup of Macao and Singapore. The latter&#8217;s is far more diverse (ergo, more stable), drawing from all over the Eastern Hemisphere, as well as a goodly portion of the West.<\/p>\n<p>Once Chinese, Taiwanese and <strong>Hong Kong<\/strong> visitors are subtracted from the Macao tourist mix, you&#8217;re left with 12% from the rest of the Pacific Rim, with perhaps a few Occidentals somewhere in there. The notion that one could simply superimpose the <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> business model upon Macao and &#8212; <em>voila!<\/em> &#8212; have an international tourist magnet may not be mistaken but it still hasn&#8217;t been validated, either.
