{"id":4399,"date":"2010-08-19T12:54:30","date_gmt":"2010-08-19T20:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=4399"},"modified":"2010-08-19T14:59:06","modified_gmt":"2010-08-19T22:59:06","slug":"peril-on-the-strip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/peril-on-the-strip\/","title":{"rendered":"Peril on the Strip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You wouldn&#8217;t know if from the wrap on Luxor&#8217;s west side, but <strong>Angelica Bridges<\/strong> is out as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/vacationplanner-showdetail.cfm?ShowID=43\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Fantasy<\/em><\/a> headliner, replaced by <strong>Lorena Peril<\/strong> (late of <em>Sin City Bad Girls<\/em> at the <strong>Las Vegas Hilton<\/strong>). This alone is sufficient to bump <em>Fantasy<\/em> to the top of the topless heap in <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>. While Bridges sang tolerably, Peril has the kind of lungpower and style that make her the <strong>Darlene Love<\/strong> of contemporary Vegas: a star-quality voice just one step shy of the name recognition she deserves. Kudos to <em>Fantasy<\/em>&#8216;s producers for snapping Peril up when her Hilton show closed. They knew a good thing when they heard one.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1954\" title=\"palazzo_floor\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/palazzo_floor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/palazzo_floor.jpg 399w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/palazzo_floor-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/palazzo_floor-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/>Palazzo #1<\/strong>. No, <strong>Steve Wynn<\/strong>, I don&#8217;t get it either. Then again, I&#8217;ve not stayed in a <strong>Palazzo<\/strong> hotel room. (<strong>The Venetian<\/strong>&#8216;s rooms wear their 11 years &#8212; venerable by Vegas standards&#8211; lightly, however.) Readers of <em>Travel + Leisure<\/em> voted Palazzo tops among Vegas hotels and 18th overall, in a poll to determine the &#8220;Top 50 Hotels in the Continental U.S. and Canada.&#8221; Palazzo prexy <strong>Rob Goldstein<\/strong> opted for grace over bragadoccio, deferring credit with the statement, \u201c<em>The fact that this award is  generated from the magazine\u2019s readers and our guests shows the public  recognizes the quality of The Palazzo \u2013 which is a true testament to our  dedicated staff<\/em>.\u201d Sands not only has reader accolades but rising ADRs to point toward as metrics of Palazzo&#8217;s popularity. (Three Wynn-created hotels also got love from <em>T+L<\/em> readers, with <strong>Wynn Las Vegas<\/strong>, <strong>Bellagio<\/strong> and <strong>Encore<\/strong> finishing at #20, 31 and 40, respectively.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s chillin&#8217;<\/strong>. In its continuing effort to make <strong>Monte Carlo<\/strong> something more than a doorstop for <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>, owner <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> is opening a new branch of<!--more--> <strong>Minus5<\/strong>, the &#8220;ice bar&#8221; at <strong>Mandalay Place<\/strong>. I&#8217;m surprised they waited until mid-August to do so. Nothing is more tailor-made for midsummer in Vegas than a 23-degree hangout where even your drinking glass is shaped from frozen H2O.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shamed by Atlantic City<\/strong>. The embattled seaside casino town is about to accomplish something nobody on the Strip can &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/business\/article_f7ea52da-aae1-11df-a373-001cc4c03286.html\" target=\"_blank\">arrive upon a labor accord between dealers and management<\/a> at <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong>. This, if it comes off, will be a feather in the cap of new owner <strong>Carl Icahn<\/strong>, who&#8217;s close to a deal while <strong>Trump Plaza<\/strong>, <strong>Bally&#8217;s Atlantic City<\/strong> and <strong>Caesars Atlantic City<\/strong> continue to pout and drag their feet. <strong>Trump Entertainment Resorts<\/strong> has been particularly churlish but <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment<\/strong> has been at some pains to poison relationships with its dealers on the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>, so one isn&#8217;t surprised to find it bringing up the rear in <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong>, too. Were Icahn to promise unionized status to (potential) dealers at <strong>Fontainebleau<\/strong> &#8212; unlikely as that is &#8212; he&#8217;d probably be canonized on the spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life after Icahn?<\/strong> The mogul&#8217;s successors at the <strong>Stratosphere<\/strong>, the renowned casino-management firm better known as <strong>Goldman Sachs<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2010\/aug\/11\/stratosphere-owner-reports-loss-second-quarter\/\" target=\"_blank\">continue to lose money<\/a>. Higher ADRs at non-Strat properties aren&#8217;t reflective of better occupancy &#8230; quite the reverse (55% of rooms empty at <strong>Arizona Charlie&#8217;s Boulder<\/strong>). Goldman blames its misfortunes on aggressive promotional efforts by its competition. That sounds like a weak excuse.
