In the last quarter, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/breaking\/article_c4bc847e-aaf4-11df-89cc-001cc4c03286.html?mode=image&amp;photo=0\" target=\"_blank\">only four casinos turned a profit<\/a>. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Showboat<\/strong> and <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Marina<\/strong> properties were slightly ahead of break-even, <strong>Tropicana Atlantic City<\/strong> booked a nice, $4.5 million profit and <strong>Borgata<\/strong> made out like a bandit (+$17 million). Yes, that means both <strong>Caesars Atlantic City<\/strong> and <strong>Bally&#8217;s Wild Wild West<\/strong> posted losses, as did all the <strong>Trump Entertainment Resorts<\/strong> casinos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biggest loser<\/strong>, however, was <strong>Colony Capital<\/strong>&#8216;s debt-encrusted <strong>Atlantic City Hilton<\/strong> (<em>above<\/em>), -$13 million, even though two other casinos took in less net revenue. When running a casino in Atlantic City is becoming a money-losing proposition,<!--more--> Christie&#8217;s rhetoric about potentially presiding over the Boardwalk&#8217;s demise is more prescient than hyperbolic. In the meantime, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/communities\/atlantic-city_pleasantville_brigantine\/article_56a46f92-ab35-11df-94a8-001cc4c03286.html\" target=\"_blank\">nobody seems to have a plan for monetizing<\/a> the city&#8217;s beloved albatross, <strong>Bader Field<\/strong>. There was a time that <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> was offering $800 million for it (mainly as a real estate play), but the company should count itself lucky the deal went south. Otherwise, it might be look at a $3oo million or greater writedown and a whole lotta buyers&#8217; remorse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t say Sam Nazarian<\/strong> never did anything with the <strong>Sahara<\/strong>. No, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-08-18\/luxury-hotelier-nazarian-shops-new-york-revamps-in-miami-beach-to-expand.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">he restructured its debt<\/a>. He may have the magic touch in other markets but Nazarian&#8217;s Vegas foothold never made great sense. People who want to own &#8220;boutique-y, luxury type of hotels&#8221; don&#8217;t buy the Sahara, neither as an asset nor for its location. Nazarian just doesn&#8217;t seem the right owner for the bargain-conscious Sahara and it seems a poor fit for his portfolio, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If nothing else gets recalcitrant legislators off their duffs and behind Gov.
