That&#8217;d be funny if it weren&#8217;t so sad. With the sands of time (as opposed to those of <strong>Sheldon Adelson<\/strong>) fast running out on the current Congress and a Republican takeover of the <strong>House of Representatives<\/strong> an all-but-done deal, the <strong>American Gaming Association<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/general\/2010\/10\/05\/casinos-get-excited-about-online-gaming.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">tardily swinging into action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1853\" title=\"Gary_loveman_Cropped_fmt\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Gary_loveman_Cropped_fmt.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"203\" \/>Given the fiscal advantages outlined by Hoium &#8212; &#8220;<em>low start-up costs, high margins, high growth potential &#8230; everything a company dreams of<\/em>&#8221; &#8212; you have to wonder why it took the casino sector so long to coalesce around this issue. <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment<\/strong> has been the boldest in the &#8216;Net-bet arena but audacity may be morphing into rashness as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisislondon.co.uk\/standard-business\/article-23885325-888-sparkles-as-city-talks-up-prospects-of-las-vegas-approach.do\" target=\"_blank\">it mulls a takeover<\/a> of <strong>888 Holdings<\/strong>. If online wagering isn&#8217;t made legal in the U.S., this could be the $578 million <strong>Macao<\/strong> golf course all over again and another white elephant in <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>&#8216;s menagerie.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of pushing all-out to legitimize Internet poker in early 2009, the industry pissed<!--more--> away the better part of two years. Even now, Sen. <strong>Harry Reid<\/strong> (D-NV) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/04\/business\/04gambling.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">is only beginning to climb off the fence<\/a>. Given <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/politics\/us_senate\/index.html?story=\/politics\/war_room\/2010\/10\/06\/senate_inaction\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">his mind-boggling ineptitude<\/a>, don&#8217;t get your hope ups for an even partial <strong>UIGEA<\/strong> repeal.* If Hapless Harry had 99 votes in support, he&#8217;d <em>still<\/em> find a way to screw the pooch. Nor is switching horses to <strong>Sharron Angle<\/strong> going to make things better: She&#8217;s an outspoken opponent of Internet gambling (and a tacit foe of all other forms of betting, one strongly suspects).<\/p>\n<p><strong>If even an Internet-poker loophole<\/strong> gets snuck through the Senate, it&#8217;d be a doggone miracle. Right now this is looking like an epic fail by an industry that was too busy squabbling amongst itself to recognize a common adversary until it had checkmated them. Nice going.<\/p>\n<p>* &#8212; It&#8217;s hilarious beyond description to hear Reid&#8217;s GOP detractors try to paint him as anti-business when he&#8217;s been carrying water for gaming and mining interests since time immemorial.
