{"id":5652,"date":"2011-01-25T13:45:53","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T21:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=5652"},"modified":"2018-07-20T14:30:22","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T22:30:22","slug":"another-one-bites-the-dust-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/another-one-bites-the-dust-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Another one bites the dust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whoever gets the three resort casinos that Gov. <strong>Deval Patrick<\/strong> (D) wants to bring to <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, it probably won&#8217;t be <strong>Fall River<\/strong> and it certainly won&#8217;t be the <strong>Mashpee Wampanoags<\/strong>. The city has pulled a controversial land deal with the tribe off the table. The project was contingent upon, among other things, Congress &#8220;fixing&#8221; the <em>Carcieri v. Salazar<\/em> ruling, so this was always one of the longer shots for a Bay State casino, although one expects the tribe to shop it elsewhere around the commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"width: 450px;\"><strong>Start making sense<\/strong>. There are few states whose attitude toward gambling is as mixed-up as <strong>South Carolina<\/strong>&#8216;s. You can buy lottery tickets in the Palmetto State but <!--more-->God forbid you should hold a raffle. Politicians down there can get incredibly tight-assed about gambling, egged on by their allies in the pulpit. Heck, if you put video poker machines in <strong>Fort Sumter<\/strong>, they&#8217;d probably bombard it all over again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"width: 450px;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2964 alignnone\" title=\"Pinnacle+051709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Pinnacle+051709.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Pinnacle+051709.JPG 450w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Pinnacle+051709-150x92.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Pinnacle+051709-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>A hopeful sign<\/strong>. Amid flutters of improvement in the <strong>Louisiana<\/strong> gambling industry and at <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong> itself, the company is showing it&#8217;s serious about completing its <strong>Baton Rouge<\/strong> casino, a project voted in over the opposition of Gov. <strong>Bobby Jindal<\/strong> (R). During the interregnum that followed the ouster of former CEO <strong>Dan Lee<\/strong>, it looked like the riverboat might be one of the casualties of company-wide retrenchment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"width: 450px;\">But with a December opening planned and a new general manager in the form of <strong>Mickey Parenton<\/strong> (a Pelican State native and Gulf Coast casino veteran), all systems are &#8220;go.&#8221; Once again, the ranks of current and former <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> executives prove to be a plentiful hunting ground for other companies&#8217; managerial needs. Number-two man <strong>Rafael Verde<\/strong>, by contrast, has been shipped in from Pinnacle&#8217;s jettisoned <strong>Casino Magic Argentina<\/strong>, a far-flung outpost that was sold as part of the company&#8217;s belt-tightening regime.<\/p>\n<p style=\"width: 450px;\"><strong>Even Vegas locals<\/strong> are said to be agog over <strong>The Cosmopolitan<\/strong>, which might be the resort&#8217;s most remarkable feat of all, per <em>Las Vegas Sun<\/em> columnist <strong>John Katsilometes<\/strong>. Just this morning, I was e-mailing a friend about Las Vegans&#8217; schizoid attitude toward the Strip. We live and die by its fortunes, yet few things are more vehemently disparaged than tourists and Strip casinos alike. Go figure. And by the way, doesn&#8217;t it look like somebody Photoshopped Cosmo CEO <strong>John Unwin<\/strong>&#8216;s head onto the body <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/blogs\/kats-report\/2011\/jan\/24\/whether-youre-local-strip-entertainer-or-nba-owner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in that photo<\/a>? Does he really have so little neck and a noggin so disproportionate to the rest of his body? Say it ain&#8217;t so, John!<\/p>\n<p style=\"width: 450px;\">(For those who tired of Cosmo coverage, I simply want to add that its buzz has longer &#8220;legs&#8221; than those of <strong>CityCenter<\/strong>, which was old news by this time last year.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whoever gets the three resort casinos that Gov.
