Citing constitutional issues, he said legislators ought to put the issue to popular vote &#8230; a plebiscite the casinos are almost certain to lose. (Were the issue <em>sports<\/em> betting, the probable outcome would be reversed.) Lawmakers, in turn, can throw this veto back in Christie&#8217;s face the next time he poor-mouths them during budget negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Also scoring a Pyrrhic victory was <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, which is clearly in no hurry to pay down its nearly $20 billion in long-term debt. Were Christie <a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/02\/christie-wont-run-in-2012\/?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to pursue his presidential ambitions<\/a> and succeed, CEO <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> can forget altogether about that already-improbable <!--more-->federal solution of which he continues to dream. Perhaps it&#8217;s a misery-loves-company business plan: If Harr, er, Caesars can&#8217;t have online gambling, neither can anyone else in the U.S., right?<\/p>\n<p>However &#8230; the company might get dragged kicking and screaming into the online marketplace if <strong>Iowa<\/strong>, <strong>Illinois<\/strong> or <strong>California<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/03\/03\/legalize-online-gambling_n_830338.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lawmakers embrace the idea<\/a>. And if <strong>Florida<\/strong>, <strong>New York State<\/strong> or the <strong>District of Columbia<\/strong> takes the plunge, Loveman could find himself on the outside, looking in.
