(For a state that&#8217;s about to attempt to create a Buckeye casino industry, the <strong>Ohio<\/strong> refusal might be most counterproductive, as the line would have linked three of the four casino-enabled cities.)<\/p>\n<p>But whoa! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/12\/us\/12rail.html?_r=1&amp;nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=tha23&amp;pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">The recent rail debacle<\/a> in <strong>Florida<\/strong> provides fair warning of obstacles that <!--more-->might be flung athwart the Desert Xpress cowcatcher: the relatively brevity of the line (which stops well short of <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>), lurking opposition by the petroleum-magnate <strong>Koch Brothers<\/strong> and the already-familiar question: &#8220;<em>Could riders be persuaded to leave their cars behind and buy tickets to places where they would still probably need cars<\/em>?&#8221; Like &#8230; Victorville. (Or <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong>, if you&#8217;re willing to leave the comfy confines of Downtown or the Strip.)
