Lawmakers would extend a grubby mitt into the casino kitty and scoop up any unclaimed moolah. &#8220;[W]hy does the gaming establishment get to keep it,&#8221; harrumphed Assm. <strong>William Horne<\/strong> (D), throwing in a bit of demagoguery for good measure. (Big Bad Casino vs. John Q. Public) Only slot-ticket revenue would be affected but, rather than be content to tax the unclaimed vouchers, Horne and colleagues want to confiscate the lot. It&#8217;s vile and cowardly. Silver State lawmakers have run screaming from <!--more-->the idea of even the piddliest gross-receipts tax for non-gaming businesses but don&#8217;t piling on the casinos, an industry many Nevadans tend to resent.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2386\" title=\"Trump small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Trump-small-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Trump-small-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Trump-small-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Trump-small.jpg 488w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Oaf of Office<\/strong>. Of course people remember <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/23\/trump-again-questions-obamas-birthplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">when he was a first-grader<\/a>. Because he&#8217;s so damned obnoxious, that&#8217;s why! He must have been a regular <strong>Little Lord Fauntleroy<\/strong> back then. Trump doesn&#8217;t strike me as someone you&#8217;d easily forget, no matter how much you wish you could. Anyway, I hope the fact that the casino figurehead is entertaining presidential <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">delusions<\/span> aspirations doesn&#8217;t mean we&#8217;ll have to pay closer attention to <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intel\/2011\/03\/for_the_love_of_god_somebody_s.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">every inane thing<\/a> he says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Besides, it&#8217;s probably<\/strong> just a grotesque publicity stunt for his TV show. After all, in a presidential debate nobody would have to treat Trump with deference &#8212; and it&#8217;s not like he can jab his finger the opposition, say, &#8220;Ya fired,&#8221; and never have to confront them again. Politics ain&#8217;t beanbag but Donald Trump is its whoopee cushion.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6083\" title=\"rick-perry\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/rick-perry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/rick-perry.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/rick-perry-121x150.jpg 121w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Penn 1, Pinnacle 0<\/strong>. Over at The Newspaper That Must Not Be Linked, <strong>Howard Stutz<\/strong> reports that <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> is taking a dim view of casino prospects in <strong>Texas<\/strong>. A new report by <strong>Morgan Joseph<\/strong> analyst <strong>Justin Sebastiano<\/strong> enumerates the high hurdles casino legalization would have to clear: two-thirds approval by both houses of the Lege, majority approval by the electorate &#8230; with all those obstacles, the intractable opposition of Gov. <strong>Rick Perry<\/strong> (R, <em>left<\/em>) is lagniappe. As Stutz notes, this is very good news for <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>, so heavily invested in neighboring <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What Sebastiano is evidently too kind mention is that his is a bulletin of gloomy portent for <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>. Remember, Penn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/penn-national-gaming-enters-into-joint-venture-to-own-and-operate-three-texas-pari-mutuel-facilities-103513504.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">went halfsies into a trio of Texas tracks<\/a>. Does CEO <strong>Peter Carlino<\/strong> have an exit strategy that doesn&#8217;t involve taking a bath on his Lone Star investment? As long shots go, this was one of the longest &#8212; unless Penn is prepared to sit on those parimutuels for a spell, hoping that the economy gets still worse and Texas lawmakers more budgetarily desperate. Like <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, Penn appears prone to rash decisionmaking and will probably wish it had spent that money elsewhere &#8230; like<strong> Columbus<\/strong>, <strong>Ohio<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/live\/content\/local_news\/stories\/2011\/03\/22\/trade-unions-urge-start-of-casino.html?sid=101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">where Penn is pleading poverty<\/a> to the city fathers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; some money after midnight: Evidently it&#8217;s not enough that gaming revenues and other casino-related retail taxes underwrite the State of Nevada.
