Somebody obviously thinks it&#8217;s still 2007, as they&#8217;re proposing a $1.5 billion, 171-acre <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2011\/apr\/07\/henderson-announces-plans-works-15-billion-health-\/\" target=\"_blank\">hospital-<em>cum<\/em>-retirement-community complex<\/a> for <strong>Henderson<\/strong>. It doesn&#8217;t include a casino (yet) but there will be condos, an &#8220;all-suite hotel&#8221; outdoor caf\u00e9s, a cineplex, restaurants, two museums, a merry-go-round &#8230; and a Ferris wheel. (Has <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> been told about this?) Developer <strong>Juliet Cos<\/strong>. was even able to enlist Gov. <strong>Brian Sandoval<\/strong> to pimp\u00a0 this vaporware. City officials are understandably desperate for job creation but, as TV reports pointed out, the question of how all this will be financed was simply begged. Channeling <strong>Fox Mulder<\/strong>, Henderson Mayor <strong>Andy Hafen<\/strong> declared, &#8220;<em>I do believe the funding is out there.  I just believe America is looking for something to invest in<\/em>,&#8221; although that &#8220;something&#8221; probably ought to be <strong>Wynn Resorts<\/strong> stock.<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/www.8newsnow.com\/global\/video\/videoplayer.js?rnd=672079;hostDomain=www.8newsnow.com;playerWidth=450;playerHeight=355;isShowIcon=true;clipId=5734628;flvUri=;partnerclipid=;adTag=News;advertisingZone=;enableAds=true;landingPage=;islandingPageoverride=false;playerType=STANDARD_EMBEDDEDscript;controlsType=overlay\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><br \/>\nForgive my skepticism but projects like this were a dime a dozen during the 2005-07 bubble years. And, watching <strong>Union Village<\/strong>&#8216;s video pitch, it looked exactly like umpteen other Vegas-area &#8220;new urbanism&#8221; projects that are either scrapped, incomplete, insolvent or simply dying a slow death &#8212; like <strong>Lake Las Vegas<\/strong> or <strong>The District<\/strong>, which sits ghost town-like at the doorstep of bustling <strong>Green Valley Ranch<\/strong> casino.
