Leave it to <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> CEO <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>, that&#8217;s how. If you&#8217;ve noticed that the food quality at <strong>The Rio<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/referenceguide-buffetdetail.cfm?BuffetID=26\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnival World Buffet<\/a> has declined (the &#8220;New York Steak&#8221; at our last visit was downright rancid) or that the balloon marquee in front of <strong>Paris-Las Vegas<\/strong> is almost completely denuded of paint, take comfort in the thought that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/news\/2011\/jul\/28\/caesars-executives-receive-bonuses-cutting-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">high-ranking Caesars execs are being richly remunerated<\/a> for the continued degradation of the company&#8217;s assets. That&#8217;s to say nothing of strong-arming the workforce by rescinding cash awards for good performance or trying to confiscate dealers&#8217; tips. (Regarding the former, Caesars&#8217; tribunes were miffed that the plebians were spending their extra lucre &#8220;on gas and groceries.&#8221; The effrontery of the rabble!)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2291\" title=\"halkyard\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/halkyard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/halkyard.jpg 178w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/halkyard-107x150.jpg 107w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/>Caesars may be almost $19 billion in debt and lost &#8220;only&#8221; $147 million in 1Q11, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/feeds\/ap\/2011\/07\/29\/business-specialized-consumer-services-us-caesars-bonuses_8591994.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that didn&#8217;t stop Loveman from showering almost $8 million<\/a> on court favorites like CFO <strong>Jonathan Halkyard<\/strong> (<em>right<\/em>). Nor did Loveman neglect himself, shoving $1 million into his own pocket. That&#8217;s considerably more than was received by Halkyard and two divisional presidents combined. Of course, that is the sort of leading-by-example we&#8217;ve come to expect from a CEO who wants the public (and rival casinos) to pony up so he can have a vanity arena out back of <strong>Imperial Palace<\/strong>. Is it that far-fetched to suggest that Loveman has a boner for a <strong>Flamingo Road<\/strong> sports stadium because he&#8217;d be able to attend a couple of <!--more-->additional games by the <strong>Boston Celtics<\/strong>, of which he is a minority owner?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5215\" title=\"Loveman head\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Loveman-head.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Loveman-head.jpg 178w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Loveman-head-113x150.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/>From the start to (eventual) finish, this whole LBO caper at <strong>One Harrah&#8217;s Court<\/strong> has been grabbing as much for Number One while the grabbing is good &#8212; and even when it isn&#8217;t &#8212; and to hell with the company. Caesars&#8217; current, sorry estate was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvbusinesspress.com\/articles\/2006\/12\/29\/news\/news_update\/doc45955ddc4b607063648833.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thoroughly predictable<\/a> outcome. However, with no pesky shareholders around anymore, there will be scant complaint about the degeneration of the former <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment<\/strong> into a personal piggy bank for Loveman&#8217;s cronies. The crowning hilarity was Loveman appending to his signature to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cincinnati.com\/article\/20110717\/BIZ01\/307170006\/Local-CEOs-don-t-mince-words-?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">a CEO petition urging Uncle Sam not to default<\/a>. That&#8217;s damn funny coming from a guy who kept the banks at bay with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2009\/03\/04\/harrahs-rating-moodys-idUSN0449743220090304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the ominous specter of a Caesars debt default<\/a>. He&#8217;ll be here all week, folks &#8230; and for the foreseeable future, I&#8217;m afraid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caesars has no monopoly<\/strong> on greed, either. <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> CEO <strong>Jim Murren<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2010\/apr\/21\/mgm-mirage-ceo-murren-paid-1375m-in-2009\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took home a phat pay packet in 2009<\/a>, even as his company lost $1.29 billion, stock price fell from $15.44 to $9.12 per share and $8.5 billion folly <strong>CityCenter<\/strong> lumbered unsteadily toward completion. Disconnect much? And if you think compensation committees are independent-minded, logical bodies, please give my regards to <strong>Santa Claus<\/strong> and the <strong>Easter Bunny<\/strong> when you see them next.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7202\" title=\"Eva Longoria\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Eva-Longoria.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Eva-Longoria.jpg 262w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Eva-Longoria-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Eva-Longoria-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/>On the subject of follies<\/strong>, losses at <strong>Eva Longoria<\/strong>&#8216;s restaurant, <strong>Beso<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/news\/2011\/jul\/28\/langoria-ordered-appear-court-over-beso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">have widened considerably<\/a> since the closing of its <strong>Eve<\/strong> nightclub. Someday, this will remembered as one of Vegas&#8217; most high-profile failures. For the time being, <strong>Crystals<\/strong> continues to prop Longoria up by conveniently forgetting that Beso is millions of dollars in arrears on its rent. (Where can <em>I<\/em> get a landlord like that?) Charity is admirable but if Crystals keeps subsidizing Longoria, how long will it be before other tenants demand to renegotiate their leases &#8212; or simply don&#8217;t bother to pay, with no consequences to fear?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Murderers Row<\/strong>. That could be the new nickname of the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong> if casino-security personnel and <strong>Las Vegas Metro<\/strong> don&#8217;t get a grip on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktnv.com\/news\/local\/126293263.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">wave of homicides<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/ww.lasvegassun.com\/news\/2011\/jul\/28\/prosecutors-consider-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">such as this<\/a>) that have marred the summer and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktnv.com\/news\/local\/125119084.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">spilled over into the community<\/a>. It may even be worse than we know. Yours truly witnessed the aftermath of a violent altercation on the <strong>Excalibur<\/strong>\/<strong>New York-New York<\/strong> pedestrian bridge on the evening of July 14. Despite the presence of hundreds of onlookers, several Metro black-and-whites, and even a paramedic unit, it didn&#8217;t make the papers. Nothing to see here, folks.
