\"\"Meanwhile Downtown<\/strong>, after much anticipation, long delay and many leaks, it has been officially disclosed<\/a> that the Plaza Hotel & Casino<\/strong> will be hosting Insurgo Theater Movement<\/strong> (left<\/em>) in its third-floor performance space, which is being adapted to host serious (and not-so-serious) “theatuh.” Insurgo will debut at the Plaza on Sept. 1 with Waiting for Godot<\/em>, which pretty much describes the local economy, when you think of it. (Imagine Jim Murren<\/strong> and Gary Loveman<\/strong> as the two tramps, with Sheldon Adelson<\/strong> as Pozzo and Steve Wynn<\/strong> in the verbally incontinent role of Lucky.)<\/p>\n

Having chronicled Insurgo’s ups and downs<\/strong> over the past two-plus years, I assure you that the company can almost always be counted upon to produce an exciting and offbeat project. The Plaza gets another shot at drawing the local-hipster crowd and maybe even tourists who something other than magicians, impressionists and standup comedians. Here’s a sample of what to expect:

Rosalie Miletich-Ellis<\/strong> puts the moves on Dave Surratt<\/strong> (or vice versa) in John Beane<\/strong>‘s<\/em> The Interview.<\/p>\n

After Godot<\/strong>, Insurgo will revive Cannibal! The Musical<\/em>, which ran successfully off-Strip<\/a> at the Onyx Theatre<\/strong> and (somewhat less successfully<\/a>) in a wretched, black hole of a space at Town Square<\/strong>. While most Vegas theater companies shy away from open-ended runs, Insurgo will present Cannibal!<\/em> as long as demand lasts. Huge congratulations to Tamares Group<\/strong> and PlayLV<\/strong> CEO Anthony Santo<\/strong> for thinking way, way<\/em> outside of the box on this. Hopefully their example will embolden other casino properties to think along similar lines. There is, however, one potential downside to the Plaza\/Insurgo arrangement. It is, in a word … clowns.
