The forced exit of Jerry Lewis from the <strong>Muscular Dystrophy Association<\/strong>&#8216;s annual telethon puts the penultimate nail in the coffin of an ancient <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> institution. The telethon format <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-et-jerry-lewis-20110805,0,2905639,full.story\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">is cumbersome and inefficient compared to emerging technologies<\/a> (and this particular one has been <!--more-->the subject of hard-earned ridicule for decades). As for the crusade itself, the cause of muscular dystrophy has faces for today&#8217;s generation in the former of <strong>Justin Bieber<\/strong> and gridiron star <strong>Clay Matthews<\/strong>. However, even though Lewis himself has never been the epitome of class, the MDA needn&#8217;t have followed his example by metaphorically pushing him down the stairs, much as <strong>Richard Widmark<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FHHJsXH3BiU\" target=\"_blank\">did with wheelchair-bound old woman<\/a> in <em>Kiss of Death<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All things must end.
