\"\"Las Vegas<\/strong>‘ new performing arts palace<\/a>, The Smith Center<\/strong>, has opened coveted the Broadway<\/strong> hit, The Book of Mormon<\/em>. However, a heavyweight competitor could snatch Mormon<\/em> from under Smith CEO Myron Martin<\/strong>‘s nose. Rumor has Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> in the hunt for the musical, which it would put into one of Palazzo<\/strong>‘s showrooms. It makes sense. The big theater is newly bereft of Jersey Boys<\/em><\/a>, which has just set up shop at Paris-Las Vegas<\/strong> (Loveman 1, Adelson 0). Also, the musicals heretofore mooted as Jersey Boys<\/em> replacements have been fairly unexciting titles — at least by comparison to what they’d be following. Book of Mormon<\/em> would definitely restore some of Venelazzo<\/strong>‘s greatly diminished mojo as a place to be entertained. Even as well-heeled as Smith Center is, when it competes with Strip casinos for big-name attractions, it’s going up against the deepest wallets in town.<\/p>\n

Care to guess?<\/strong> Which venerable Vegas casino will be renamed — I kid you not — “theD<\/strong>“? The first person to conjecture correctly gets some LVA<\/em> swag.<\/p>\n

Yesterday may have been<\/strong> Super Tuesday in some parts of the country. But for many of us it will be remembered in terms of, “Where were you when the news broke that the Indianapolis Colts<\/strong> were cutting Peyton Manning<\/strong>?” In my case, it was sitting in our front room, listening apprehensively as 60-mph gusts of wind ripped shingles from our roof. The winds were so fierce that Mandalay Bay<\/strong> and Luxor<\/strong> became all but invisible behind a wall of dust … despite being less than 1.5 miles away. My apologies to anyone who chose this week for their Vegas vacation.<\/p>\n
