With the help of tighter slots, A.C. held its September decline to 6%, the lowest of 2009 and the smallest drop in over a year. Even perpetual dog <strong>Resorts International<\/strong> had a good month, up 4% y\/y.<\/p>\n<p>Both in dollar volume ($63 million) and growth (6%), the leader was &#8212; no surprise &#8212; <strong>Borgata<\/strong>. In fact, the <strong>Boyd Gaming<\/strong> property made more than the four lowest-grossing properties (Resorts, <strong>Atlantic City Hilton<\/strong>, <strong>Trump Plaza<\/strong>, <strong>Trump Marina<\/strong>) combined. The two lesser Trump properties slipped below the <strong>Colony Capital<\/strong> ones, so one doesn&apos;t know whether to feel good for Colony or sorry for <strong>Trump Entertainment Resorts<\/strong>. The handover of Resorts Int&apos;l continues to proceed slowly, as regulators <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/business\/article_95d882e4-b837-11de-b259-001cc4c03286.html\">enter uncharted waters<\/a> with understandable caution.<\/p>\n<p>Percentage-wise, <strong>Showboat<\/strong>, the Hilton and the Plaza had the worst of it, while gainers included <strong>Harrah&apos;s Atlantic City<\/strong> (3%) and even the <strong>Tropicana<\/strong> (1%). But the bloom is off the <strong>Trump Taj Mahal<\/strong> rose; it fell back to the middle of the pack, grossing $36 million.<\/p>\n<p>One unexpected factor in the city&apos;s bump was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/news\/press\/atlantic_city\/article_5a46610c-b52a-11de-b17e-001cc4c002e0.html\">a late-September, gay-themed promotion<\/a> at the four <strong>Harrah&apos;s Entertainment<\/strong> properties. For all the lip service paid, year after year, to diversifying Atlantic City&apos;s appeal, <strong>Don Marrandino<\/strong> and his Harrah&apos;s colleagues backed up the talk with meaningful action.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"350\" height=\"343\" src=\"\/userfiles\/Image\/trumpmarina.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Dead casino walking: Trump Marina<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Back at Trump<\/strong>, its CEO, <strong>Mark Juliano<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5j4HzzSSaTLrMZwUOngAk5kRQaOjAD9B7P9J80\" class=\"broken_link\">declares<\/a> &quot;The real question is how long until we get back to the results we saw in past years, which is the question everyone in every business has.&quot; No, the real question is: On what planet is Mr. Juliano living? <em>And<\/em>: Do they have oxygen up there?<\/p>\n<p>The math is inexorable. Excluding three months of sub-2% growth, Atlantic City&apos;s revenues have going one way &#8212; down &#8212; for the last seven quarters, often by double-digit margins. Casinos in <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong> continue to ramp up, <strong>Delaware<\/strong> is talking very seriously about casino expansion, slot parlors in <strong>Maryland<\/strong> are in train and then there&apos;s prospect of additional competition from the greater <strong>New York City<\/strong> area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead of asking<\/strong> &quot;Where are the snows of yesteryear,&quot; <em>S&amp;G<\/em> modestly suggests the Boardwalk&apos;s casino braintrust ought to be thinking about how to move forward into a future of diminished (i.e., more realistic) expectations.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"415\" height=\"332\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/userfiles\/Image\/sands-bethworks.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Up the road<\/strong>, now that the novelty factor has worn off of <strong>Sands Bethlehem<\/strong> (<em>above<\/em>), the $724 million casino <a href=\"http:\/\/media.www.thebrownandwhite.com\/media\/storage\/paper1233\/news\/2009\/10\/13\/News\/Sands.Casino.Revenue.Down.Last.Month-3800311.shtml\" class=\"broken_link\">remains mired in fifth place<\/a>. The solution? More and bigger promotions, it would appear.
