That&#8217;s the conclusion of a <strong>Benenson Group<\/strong> survey. If the fact that Benenson is President <strong>Barack Obama<\/strong>&#8216;s pollster of preference doesn&#8217;t impress you, the size of its sample (800 souls) ought to: Most pollsters skimp by on 500 responses or so, resulting in wide margins of error. Not only is <strong>New York<\/strong>&#8216;s support for Class III casinos anemic, anti-casino voters are historically militant and would probably carry the day in a tight race.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/local\/article\/Pollster-warns-New-York-s-gambling-expansion-plan-3519948.php%23ixzz1tX2ynYU8\" target=\"_blank\">Benenson&#8217;s alarming numbers<\/a>, <strong>Resorts World New York<\/strong>, <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> and <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> suddenly look as though they&#8217;ve been putting the cart before the horse. Finding a suitable location will be a breeze compared to the PR war they&#8217;ll have to wage over the next Legislature and the subsequent election cycle. (<strong>Sheldon &#8220;Tex&#8221; Adelson<\/strong> has already decided <!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasvegassun.com\/blogs\/ralstons-flash\/2012\/apr\/27\/adelson-going-underground-political-money-i-smell-\/\" target=\"_blank\">it&#8217;s no longer any fun being a political pi\u00f1ata<\/a>, a change of heart as inevitable as tonight&#8217;s sunset.*) And, with nine racinos already jockeying for a mooted seven licenses, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recordonline.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20120428\/NEWS\/204280328\/-1\/BIZ\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">plus sundry resort owners<\/a>, it&#8217;s no shoo-in that a Vegas-based company is going to be given preference to a &#8220;native son&#8221; racino or an historic resort with a hard-luck story.<\/p>\n<p>* &#8212; <em>on the subject of <strong>Internet<\/strong> poker, Adelson has been drinking <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>&#8216;s Kool-Aid but reached an entirely different conclusion, offering a gloomy prediction of a 10%-20% decline in terrestrial casino revenues<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8199\" title=\"CaesarsBallysAC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/CaesarsBallysAC.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/CaesarsBallysAC.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/CaesarsBallysAC-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>With Revel coming along<\/strong> and, many think, the future of <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> hanging in the balance, this is no time to skimp on public-sector investment. To that end, the <strong>Casino Reinvestment Development Authority<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/communities\/atlantic-city_pleasantville_brigantine\/atlantic-city-s-boardwalk-ambassadors-get-overhaul-with-bigger-budget\/article_b0b6a572-9184-11e1-8041-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\">tripling both the manpower and budget<\/a> of its <strong>Boardwalk Ambassadors<\/strong>. Their roving role is to provide a more tourist-friendly visiting experience and (more importantly) a high-profile security presence, especially after dark. Since <strong>New Jersey<\/strong> is using casinos&#8217; tax dollars to make the casino-visitation experience safer and more attractive, it would be churlish to complain about the expenditure. Likewise, <strong>Caesars Atlantic City<\/strong> has realized that making money requires spending money, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/communities\/atlantic-city_pleasantville_brigantine\/occupancy-rates-at-atlantic-city-s-casino-hotels-remain-stable\/article_32ffe1f2-9170-11e1-a0fb-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\">resulting in occupancy rates that exceed the city&#8217;s historical apex<\/a>. By contrast, the much-abused <strong>ACH<\/strong> is way down in the danger zone, at 61% occupancy despite a small room inventory.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7394\" title=\"OSheas\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/OSheas.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/OSheas.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/OSheas-150x112.gif 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Last Call<\/strong>. Good riddance to bad rubbish: Noon today was closing time at <strong>O&#8217;Shea&#8217;s<\/strong>, inarguably the scummiest casino on the Strip. Proud owner\u00a0<strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> will begin demolishing the Irish eyesore forthwith. Meanwhile, at the south of end of the <strong>Las Vegas Strip<\/strong>, quietly and without fanfare, developer <strong>Howard Bulloch<\/strong> has begun sinking the foundations for his planned Ferris wheel, meaning that the race between Bulloch and Loveman is on in earnest. If it weren&#8217;t so geographically isolated from the Caesars acreage, I&#8217;d predict Loveman to fold his &#8220;<strong>Vegas High Roller<\/strong>&#8221; project and purchase Bulloch&#8217;s instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4902\" title=\"sandoval_t178\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/sandoval_t178.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/sandoval_t178.jpg 178w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/sandoval_t178-124x150.jpg 124w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/>Out with the old<\/strong>. Three new division chiefs have been appointed at the <strong>Nevada Gaming Control Board<\/strong>. One of them, Technology Division boss <strong>Jim Barbee<\/strong>, may have some extra time on his hands now that most game-testing functions have been outsourced to the private sector (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/news\/2012\/apr\/27\/gaming-control-board-appoints-3-new-division-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">hence the departure<\/a> of predecessor <strong>Travis Foley<\/strong> for those greener pastures). That&#8217;s not likely to be the case for incoming Audit Division boss <strong>Shirley Springer<\/strong>, who inherits a chronically underfunded, understaffed, overworked NGCB branch that hasn&#8217;t grown to keep pace with Nevada&#8217;s casino industry. Gov. <strong>Brian Sandoval<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>laissez-faire<\/em> attitude toward casino regulation is likely to walk the state right into a major gaming scandal before his tenure ends.
