Which is equivalent to what Caesars did last week. Leave it to <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>&#8216;s administration to turn the opening of a new casino <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windsorstar.com\/business\/Caesars+halts+promo+Windsor+patrons+gamble+Cleveland\/6609356\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">into an international incident<\/a>. In a classic case of using direct-mail marketing as a blunderbuss rather than a rifle, Caesars blasted a promotional offer for <strong>Horseshoe Cleveland<\/strong> into the <strong>Total Rewards<\/strong> universe, scoring a &#8220;friendly fire&#8221; bullseye on &#8230; <strong>Caesars Windsor<\/strong>. It wasn&#8217;t Total Rewards so much as Total Dumbass.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9004\" title=\"dwight_duncan\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dwight_duncan-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dwight_duncan-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dwight_duncan-150x116.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dwight_duncan.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Not only<\/strong> was Windsor CEO <strong>Kevin Laforet<\/strong> ambushed by his own commanders, casino owner <strong>Ontario Lottery &amp; Gaming Corp<\/strong>. was singularly unamused and <strong>Ontario<\/strong> Minister of Finance <strong>Dwight Duncan<\/strong> (<em>right<\/em>) summarized the escapade as &#8220;boneheaded.&#8221; It was like the Ohio branch of Caesars kicking sand in their Ontario counterparts&#8217; faces, since the latter are bracing for the debut of <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Toledo<\/strong> casino on May 29. That&#8217;s bad enough without Horseshoe unwittingly attempting to plunder your marketing pool &#8212; and adding insult to injury by offering a measly $5 in free slot play. (<em>Translation<\/em>: &#8220;We think your customers are comp whores whose loyalty can be had for five bucks.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7750\" title=\"loveman\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/loveman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/>This was a screwup<\/strong> of sufficient magnitude that both Loveman and COO <strong>Tom Jenkin<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/story\/2012\/05\/11\/wdr-dwight-duncan-caesars-ohio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had to personally apologize to the provincial government<\/a>. Caesars also issued a groveling public statement in which it swore it was &#8220;very proud to operate Caesars Windsor in <strong>Canada<\/strong>.&#8221; (P.S.: Please don&#8217;t try to revoke our management contract!) Furthermore, Loveman and Jenkin must now abide by an OLG-imposed policy that no Caesars casino will market via mail to active Windsor customers without the latter&#8217;s express permission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If this doesn&#8217;t<\/strong> write <em>fin<\/em> to Loveman&#8217;s attempt to seize a beachhead in <strong>Toronto<\/strong>, in order to shore up his rapidly crumbling Canadian flank, a few additional provocations might do the trick. How about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/story\/2012\/05\/08\/wdr-casino-layoffs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">giving 27 Casino Windsor employees the chop<\/a> on the eve of Horseshoe Cleveland&#8217;s opening? (A human sacrifice to the gods of table-game hold?) It was curious payback for the province&#8217;s shutdown of a racino at <strong>Windsor Raceway<\/strong> last month. As you can imagine, it didn&#8217;t play well with the horsey set either.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9005\" title=\"Toledo Casino\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Toledo-Casino-300x138.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Toledo-Casino-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Toledo-Casino-150x69.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Toledo-Casino.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The sackings are about all we&#8217;ve seen of Laforet&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/story\/2012\/05\/07\/wdr-caesars-windsor-toledo-toronto-casinos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">much-bruited &#8220;defense plan.&#8221;<\/a> Weak on particulars, its Prime Directive is &#8220;accept the fact [customers] will try other places,&#8221; which is about the most supine &#8220;strategy&#8221; imaginable. Laforet is pinning his hopes on customers maybe having a fling with <strong>Hollywood Casino Toledo<\/strong> (<em>right<\/em>) or maybe Horseshoe Cleveland, then deciding that it&#8217;s nicer at Windsor, eh? He would also have you believe that Toronto is not a serious competitive threat to Windsor. And that money grows on trees. OK, I totally made up that last one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/story\/2012\/04\/20\/wdr-caesars-toronto.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-7378\" title=\"Jones\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones-100x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones-100x150.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Jones.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/>City officials in <strong>Windsor<\/strong> weren&#8217;t thrilled<\/a> when top Caesars lobbyist <strong>Jan Jones<\/strong> openly coveted a Toronto casino (and, compared to Loveman, she&#8217;s the essence of tact). While <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> was probing the Canadian front with the help of <strong>Sussex Strategy Group<\/strong>, Caesars went off in typically half-cocked fashion, declaring itself &#8220;absolutely&#8221; interested, without sounding out anyone in provincial or local government beforehand. It doesn&#8217;t look as though the Windsor city fathers were consulted either. Casino spokeswoman <strong>Jhoan Baluyot-Lucier<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windsorstar.com\/news\/casino+threat+downplayed+Caesars+Windsor\/6476119\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">quickly went mum<\/a> when the question of revenue impact was broached.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9006\" title=\"woodbine\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/woodbine-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/woodbine-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/woodbine-150x95.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/woodbine.jpg 565w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>One advantage Caesars holds<\/strong>: Public support for casino gambling in Toronto is tepid but there might just enough to eke out a racino at <strong>Woodbine Racetrack<\/strong> (<em>right<\/em>). That would drive off MGM, <a href=\"http:\/\/toronto.ctv.ca\/servlet\/an\/local\/CTVNews\/20120514\/toronto-mgm-casino-pitch-120514\/20120514\/?hub=TorontoNewHome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which wants to do something very big and very grand<\/a> along the waterfront. But Loveman has a few successful racinos under his belt already and, with his company on its uppers, converting an existing facility has the not-inconsiderable advantage of affordability. Besides, opines casino consultant <strong>Jake Miklojcik<\/strong>, multi-billion-dollar megaresorts are a risky bet in that neck of the maple woods. &#8220;It&#8217;s a number you would use in an underserved market &#8230; That&#8217;s not true with the Toronto area. I can think of less than five places in the entire <strong>North America<\/strong> where that could work,&#8221; he told the <em>Windsor Star<\/em>. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think Toronto would be one of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(We&#8217;ve certainly not heard from <strong>Sheldon &#8220;Tex&#8221; Adelson<\/strong> and it&#8217;s not like him to let anybody else steal a march on a lucrative new market. Perhaps paying to build a megaresort that the provincial government would own offends his concept of free-market capitalism.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look familar?<\/strong> While we&#8217;re on the subject of Total Rewards, it&#8217;s been pimping a new-look logo these last few months:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9007\" title=\"new_tr_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/new_tr_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/new_tr_logo-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/new_tr_logo-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/>For the life of me, I couldn&#8217;t figure why it looked so <em>familiar<\/em> &#8212; and I saw the light:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9009\" title=\"ImperialPalace_3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31.jpg 469w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31-150x86.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ImperialPalace_31-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/>I guess, what with the rights to <strong>Ralph Engelstad<\/strong>&#8216;s old trademark on the verge of expiration, somebody thought, &#8220;Hey, why waste it?&#8221; Add a few curlicues, change the &#8220;I&#8221; to a &#8220;T,&#8221; tilt the &#8220;R&#8221; leftwards and &#8212; <em>Banzai!<\/em> &#8212; you&#8217;ve got yourself and brand-spanking, new Total Rewards logo. Whoever thought that up deserves a bonus.
