However, like another second-tier major, <strong>Ameristar Casinos<\/strong>, it&#8217;s showing renewed signs of aggression. Like <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong>, it&#8217;s extending its presence into new (f0r Boyd) markets. Unlike Caesars, it&#8217;s doing so without significant capex expenditures. First came the acquisition of <strong>IP Biloxi<\/strong>, which has been performing up to expectations and arguably above them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4357\" title=\"Peninsula Mulvane casino\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Peninsula-Mulvane-casino.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Peninsula-Mulvane-casino.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Peninsula-Mulvane-casino-150x81.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Then, in the gloaming of yesterday, Boyd disclosed that it had committed $1.4 billion to obtaining <strong>Peninsula Gaming<\/strong>, a riverboat-and-racino outfit concentrated in Midwest and South. So eager is Peninsula to be bought out that it&#8217;s actually loaning Boyd $144 million to close the deal. Boyd will draw another $1.2 billion from its line of credit, in addition to paying Peninsula $200 million upfront. In light of Peninsula&#8217;s $109 million cash flow last year and boffo early numbers from its <strong>Kansas<\/strong> casino (<em>above<\/em>), Boyd expects the purchase to begin paying for itself straightaway, increasing EBITDA 35%.<\/p>\n<p>My hunch is that <!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052702303448404577408554105944154.html?KEYWORDS=berzon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peninsula overextended itself<\/a> with recent thrusts into Kansas and <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>, and was only too happy to talk sale terms with Big Daddy Boyd. (There may have been some last-minute renegotiation: The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> initially reported the terms as half cash\/half debt.) <em>Investor&#8217;s Business Daily<\/em> gets t<a href=\"http:\/\/news.investors.com\/article\/611747\/201205161939\/boyd-gaming-shuns-china-buys-peninsula-gaming.htm?ven=yahoocp,yahoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">he booby prize for most inane<\/a> coverage of the sale, by the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5388\" title=\"Kansas Star 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Kansas-Star-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Kansas-Star-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Kansas-Star-3-150x82.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The price is a market-standard<\/strong> 7X cash flow although there&#8217;s a nice bonus for Peninsula owners on the back end of the deal. If <strong>Kansas Star<\/strong> casino, near <strong>Wichita<\/strong>, generates $105 million in cash flow in 2015 (a lead-pipe cinch), the ex-Peninsula boys get $7.50 for ever dollar above that. This could be a huge windfall: Even in its temporary form, Kansas Star is on pace for $107 million this year &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/gosumner.com\/node\/407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">a 38% ROI<\/a>! Imagine how much bigger that number will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/wichita\/morning_call\/2012\/05\/kansas-star-casino-a-highlight-of.html?ana=yfcpc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">when the place is fully operational<\/a> and has a couple of years&#8217; of player development under its belt.<\/p>\n<p>Boyd CEO <strong>Keith Smith<\/strong> and spokesman <strong>David Strow<\/strong> both spun the purchase as a Kansas Star-centric deal (even though the <strong>Kansas Lottery<\/strong> gets 28%-31% of the take, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/wichita\/blog\/2012\/05\/boyd-peninsula-deal-wont-affect.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">owns the casino equipment, Peninsula the building<\/a>). However, it also gets Boyd into <strong>Iowa<\/strong>, where it will captain the two <em>Diamond Jo<\/em> vessels in <strong>Dubuque<\/strong> and <strong>Northwood<\/strong>, respectively. In an otherwise weak April (0ne full week less than last year), the <em>Diamond Jo<\/em>s were both up 3% and have been reliable performers across the preceding 15 months.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1105\" title=\"Amelia Belle\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Amelia-Belle-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Amelia-Belle-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Amelia-Belle.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Boyd also picks up two more assets in a favored territory, Louisiana. The <em>Amelia Belle<\/em> riverboat is a <strong>Columbia Sussex<\/strong> souvenir that Peninsula picked up and which now goes to Boyd, along with <strong>Evangeline Downs<\/strong>, which draws upon the <strong>Baton Rouge<\/strong> and <strong>Lafayette<\/strong> markets (&#8220;Red Stick&#8221; being the only Louisiana region to post favorable comparisons last month). <em>Amelia Belle<\/em> significantly outperformed the state, up 10%. The two properties grossed $146 million last year, before the Pelican State&#8217;s casinos began to trend upward and early indications are for 2012 to be even stronger Down South. Also, Boyd&#8217;s soon-to-be-five assets are sufficiently spread geographically that cannibalization should be nil.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9048\" title=\"Kansas star casino peninsula*280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Kansas-star-casino-peninsula280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Kansas-star-casino-peninsula280.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Kansas-star-casino-peninsula280-150x85.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>Although Boyd stock<\/strong> bounced nicely on the news, <strong>Wall Street<\/strong> analysts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/11540916\/1\/boyd-gaming-rolls-the-dice-on-casino-deal.html?puc=yahoo&amp;cm_ven=YAHOO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">were their usual gloom-and-doom selves when it comes to Boyd<\/a>, even though the Kansas Star deal reduces the company&#8217;s much-criticized (over)exposure in the <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> locals market and adds five turnkey properties. Instead, <strong>J.P. Morgan<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Joseph Greff<\/strong> called it &#8220;a distinct positive indicator&#8221; &#8230; for <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>, due to the latter&#8217;s &#8220;fresher&#8221; Louisiana assets.\u00a0Unremarked in the excitement is that this explains\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/news\/2012\/may\/13\/facelift-or-just-mask-county-pondering-what-do-abo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">Boyd&#8217;s recent move to punt resumption<\/a> of <strong>Echelon<\/strong> into 2018. In case we didn&#8217;t take the hint, CEO Smith said, &#8220;<em>there is not an opportunity in Las Vegas to invest this mone<\/em>y.&#8221; Besides, the Peninsula purchase will take Boyd&#8217;s long-term-debt-to-equity ratio from 2.8-1 to 3.7-1.\u00a0 Resuming a $4 billion metaresort is out of the question, unless you&#8217;re leverage-lovin&#8217; <strong>MGM Resorts International <\/strong>or Caesars. Speaking of whom &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4549\" title=\"Harrah's KS\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Harrahs-KS-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Harrahs-KS-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Harrahs-KS-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Harrahs-KS.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>It does not escape<\/strong> one&#8217;s notice that the Wichita casino is the license that then-<strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment <\/strong>CEO <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> had in hand just a few years back. (The project design can be seen at right.) However, in one of his innumerable flip-flops regarding the Sunflower State, Loveman simply up and fled. Indeed, while Capt. Deadbeat has done everything short of hang &#8220;For Sale&#8221; signs on Caesars&#8217; regional casinos, Smith bypassed Loveman in favor of Peninsula. Caesars has underperformers like <strong>Louisiana Downs<\/strong> (down 8% last month) and toxic <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Council Bluffs<\/strong> (-15%) that it would surely love to ditch but it couldn&#8217;t have have offered the attractive five-pack of properties that Peninsula did &#8212; and probably not at that price.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since a highly quixotic and even nonsensical attempt to take over most of Station Casinos, the cards have been played very, very close to the vest at Boyd Gaming.
