Except for <strong>China<\/strong>, he&#8217;s not been in any casino-expansion movement for the long haul since he lost <strong>Mirage Resorts<\/strong>. And with <strong>Las Vegas Sands<\/strong> now expressing an interest in the <strong>Toronto<\/strong> area, competitors <strong>MGM Resorts International<\/strong> and <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> already look like also-rans with Adelson in the picture. (Caesars&#8217; fire-aim-ready effort doesn&#8217;t even have the crucial joint-venture partner in place yet.) Were I pondering loan requests from those three companies, Sands would be a no-brainer first choice. Even its lesser revenue streams (like <strong>Sands Bethelehem<\/strong>) are still pretty impressive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Tex&#8221; Adelson has given<\/strong> <strong>up<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/news\/2012\/jun\/07\/sheldon-adelsons-las-vegas-sands-looking-nyc-expan\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">on the Lone Star State<\/a>, it appears, where any form of casino gambling is certain to go to horse tracks first. (Sheldon doesn&#8217;t speak &#8220;racino&#8221;).\u00a0 <strong>Florida<\/strong> is out, too &#8230; although Sands has vacillated <!--more-->endlessly on the latter since <strong>Genting<\/strong> stole its thunder. Among his other pipe dreams, building a casino in <strong>Spain<\/strong> in order to tap the <strong>Moscow<\/strong> and <strong>St. Petersburg<\/strong> markets is typical Adelson: half brilliant and half insane. Brilliant, because a wintertime getaway to a Vegas-like resort must sound pretty appealing to a shivering Muscovite. Insane, if Adelson sticks to his $35 billion price target. If &#8220;<em>we need to justify a 20 percent return on the money<\/em>&#8221; Sands invests, good luck generating $7 billion in annual cash flow from <strong>Madrid<\/strong> or <strong>Barcelona<\/strong>. (And if it&#8217;s the latter, should one adopt a Castilian lisp and refer to him as &#8220;Adel-<em>thon<\/em>&#8220;?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Therein lies the problem<\/strong> with Adelson&#8217;s stateside development schemes: There&#8217;s no way to hit 20% ROI &#8212; or even 15% &#8212; if you&#8217;re blowing billions a pop on one-size-fits-all [<em>sic<\/em>], Vegas-sized developments. (Remember, Adelson initially proposed <em>five<\/em>, $2 billion casinos for Florida.) Give <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> this much: He usually builds to the size of the market rather than indiscriminately dropping big-ass megaresorts across the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5777\" title=\"Leven\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Leven.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Leven.jpg 318w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Leven-150x106.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Leven-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/>Adelson and COO Michael Leven<\/strong> seem to be the only people who think <strong>Sands Cotai Central<\/strong> is performing up to expectations. But give them credit for evolving past a colonialist mentality toward <strong>Macao<\/strong> &#8212; or at least realizing that even if they succeeded in their appeal for the return of <strong>Sites 7 &amp; 8<\/strong>, their win would be mega-Pyrrhic. There&#8217;s no victory in causing the Chinese government to lose face, they said, and they&#8217;d rather improve the Sino-Sands relationship (or at least not cause any further deterioration). &#8220;<em>There doesn\u2019t seem to be any logical reason or any rationale to push and  alienate the government by embarrassing them by winning the appeal<\/em>,&#8221; explained Adelson, in what I have to say is a truly honorable instance of putting his ego aside for the larger good of his shareholders. Bravo, comrade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make no mistake<\/strong>. The term-limits policy instituted by <strong>Revel<\/strong> upon its employees is vile and reprehensible. No job should be a sinecure but this is, at best, a thinly veiled institutionalization of sex- and age-discrimination policies that the casino industry already <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6370\" title=\"Revel exterior\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Revel-exterior.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Revel-exterior.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Revel-exterior-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Revel-exterior-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>practices (<em>especially<\/em> against women) on the sly. In response, <strong>Unite-Here<\/strong> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressofatlanticcity.com\/business\/union-pushing-for-laws-in-atlantic-city-to-protect-casino\/article_31930388-b102-11e1-a61d-0019bb2963f4.html\" target=\"_blank\">taking the issue to the ballot box<\/a>, pushing two <strong>Atlantic City<\/strong> ordinances that would thwart Revel&#8217;s term limits and also mandate a certain level of benefits for all casino workers. The union&#8217;s goals are enlightened but I am at present undecided whether this is a matter for the negotiating table rather than the ballot box. However, if union prez <strong>Robert McDevitt<\/strong> hadn&#8217;t gone out of his way to block, sandbag and otherwise alienate Revel, we&#8217;d probably not be having this discussion. To a large extent, McDevitt made this bed and one is sorely tempted to tell him to lie in it, fucker, were it not for all the other livelihoods that are stake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Horse sense<\/strong>. Today&#8217;s sudden retirement by <strong>I&#8217;ll Have Another<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/2012\/more\/06\/08\/Ill-Have-Another-scratches-from-Belmont.ap\/index.html?eref=sihp&amp;sct=hp_t11_a1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">victim of a sports injury<\/a>, underscores the fact that the horseracing industry <a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/vault\/article\/magazine\/MAG1199021\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">is living in fantasyland<\/a> and on its way to economic extinction. Face it, horse players, the <strong>Belmont Park<\/strong> of the future will be a casino with galloping horses in lieu of dancing showgirls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No disrespect to Steve Wynn, but the human starter gun for any serious casino race is now Sheldon Adelson.
