And Sen. <strong>Harry Reid<\/strong> (D-NV) continues to push for a record amount of federal subsidy. It will take $6.9 billion, minimum (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sgvtribune.com\/news\/ci_21188241\/bay-area-sin-city-las-vegas-bullet-train\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">some sources say $8 billion<\/a>), just to get the line from <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> to that mother lode of tourism, <strong>Victorville<\/strong>. Xpress West hucksters now say they can get you all the way to <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> &#8212; with the help of a big-ass loan (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vegasinc.com\/news\/2012\/jun\/07\/desertxpress-inks-deal-add-train-link-victorville-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">at least $1.5 billion<\/a>) and an circuitous detour through <strong>Palmdale<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/07\/30\/xpresswest-high-speed-rail_n_1720543.html?ir=San+Francisco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8230; by 2029<\/a>, that is.\u00a0Having drunk deeply of their own bathwater, <!--more-->t<a href=\"http:\/\/dailyfiasco.com\/2012\/07\/31\/xpresswest-thinks-san-fran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">hey&#8217;re now talking about<\/a> a <strong>San Francisco<\/strong> leg &#8230; not to mention ones to <strong>Phoenix<\/strong>, <strong>Salt Lake City<\/strong> and <strong>Denver<\/strong>. Xpress West COO <strong>Andrew Mack<\/strong> talks vaguely about the line being &#8220;an extension of Las Vegas,&#8221; implying &#8212; but carefully not <em>promising<\/em> &#8212; the presence of <em>en route<\/em> gambling, which would be illegal beyond description.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dailyfiasco.com\/2012\/07\/31\/xpresswest-thinks-san-fran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Still not laughing<\/a>? How about pledges of $45\/ticket, 90-minute, L.A.-to-Vegas runs (subject to 17 years&#8217; worth of inflation, mind you)? Or $140\/240-minute Frisco-to-Sin City trips? Or a budget that&#8217;s chump change compared the <strong>$68 billion<\/strong> cost of this Golden State-only route? And if you think you&#8217;re going to be able to &#8220;<em>skip such hassles as airport security, bag checks and flight delays<\/em>,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V1B3AubsTBo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boy, is the joke on you<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Nor does the brain trust behind this boondoggle, er, bold experiment in transportation inspire confidence. Lead investor <strong>Anthony Marnell II<\/strong> builds casinos, not transit lines, and construction in the casino biz <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9386\" title=\"gtharaldson_sm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/gtharaldson_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"133\" \/>is notorious for cost overruns. Another $50 million comes from secretive <strong>North Dakota<\/strong> motel baron <strong>Gary Tharaldson <\/strong>(<em>left<\/em>).\u00a0That seed money is just a fraction of the $18 million\/acre he suckered out of <strong>Harrah&#8217;s Entertainment<\/strong> CEO <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong> for the old <strong>Westward Ho<\/strong> and its sister property, <strong>The Ho<\/strong>. Tharaldson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bismarcktribune.com\/news\/local\/article_0fe3486c-d656-11de-a17f-001cc4c002e0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biggest legacy to Vegas<\/a> is the failed <strong>ManhattanWest<\/strong> condo project over on the west side of the valley. Yup, just the guy I&#8217;d trust with billions in taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For now<\/strong>, the project lives or dies on federal funding. &#8220;<em>Backup planning isn&#8217;t necessarily at the top of minds right now<\/em>,&#8221; yawned an Xpress West exec. And why not? If the venture fails, it &#8220;likely&#8221; becomes a ward of the government. So one way or another, there&#8217;s a not-inconsiderable risk that <strong>John Q.
