However, it makes <strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong>&#8216;s decision to cut corners by not building the once-planned showroom (<em>above<\/em>) look downright imbecilic &#8212; or at least self-defeating. &#8220;<strong>Chelsea Ballroom<\/strong>&#8221; may sound like some swanky club on paper but when you get there &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" codebase=\"https:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/zzohoKwwvhk?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/zzohoKwwvhk?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; you&#8217;re confronted with a long, standard-issue, shoebox-format convention space. A quasi-stage sits at one end and some tremor-prone bleachers &#8212; which put one uncomfortably close to the chandeliers &#8212; are at the other, with a long &#8220;moshing pit&#8221; (as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ontheissues.org\/celeb\/Gary_Bauer_Crime.htm\" target=\"_blank\">anti-gambling nimrod<\/a> <strong>Gary Bauer<\/strong> would call it) bridging the gap. Bottle-service areas have been busked into place along the flanks. Compared to both <strong>The Pearl<\/strong> and <strong>The Joint<\/strong>, the effect is very &#8220;wrong end of the telescope,&#8221; even with the obligatory video screens. Nor is it an acoustically treated space, so the sound is very hard (though not quite so bad as <!--more-->Downtown&#8217;s stony <strong>Smith Center for the Performing Arts<\/strong>, where a <em>fortissimo<\/em> chord can leave a bruise).<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" codebase=\"https:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/6RL44gSg6cU?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/6RL44gSg6cU?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Be it <\/em><strong><em>Pet Shop Boys<\/em><\/strong><em> or <\/em><strong><em>Duran Duran<\/em><\/strong><em> or <\/em><strong><em>Elvis Costello<\/em><\/strong><em>, nobody fires up a Vegas crowd nearly as much as <\/em><strong><em>Kelly Clarkson<\/em><\/strong><em>. Maybe <\/em><strong><em>Sir Elton John<\/em><\/strong><em>, but that&#8217;s about it in my experience<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage illumination is<\/strong> obviously very makeshift: The backlighting for Clarkson&#8217;s opening number was placed in such a manner that it was literally blinding. And if you&#8217;re seeing a multi-band show &#8230; <em>fughedabboudit<\/em>! It took <strong>The Fray<\/strong> the better part of an hour to haul their (excessively) elaborate setup into place, by which time the post-Clarkson buzz had thoroughly worn off. The Fray&#8217;s set didn&#8217;t go so well either &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" codebase=\"https:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/R8O6xd5YWMw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/R8O6xd5YWMw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Fray lead singer <strong>Isaac Slade<\/strong> makes <strong>Bob Dylan<\/strong> sound like a professor of elocution. However, opening act <strong>Carolina Liar<\/strong> had better watch out or they&#8217;ll give <strong>Christian rock<\/strong> a good name. They were everything The Fray wasn&#8217;t. As for the Chelsea Ballroom itself, Deutsche Bank picked one of the stupidest ways of saving money, <em>particularly<\/em> in light of CEO <strong>John Unwin<\/strong>&#8216;s business plan. Like its casino, the Cosmo&#8217;s &#8220;concert hall&#8221; is a good concept undone by cheeseparing half-measures. Oh, and it&#8217;s hellishly remote and difficult to find, too.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" codebase=\"https:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZOLV1RQpFdI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZOLV1RQpFdI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The climactic audience-participation number of the<\/em> Stronger Tour 2.0 <em>Cosmo concert. Scuttlebutt from the Strip &#8212; and from pretty &#8220;juiced in&#8221; channels at that &#8212; characterizes <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>&#8216;s Ferris wheel as dead in the water. If that&#8217;s indeed the case, it would fulfill my prediction on <strong>KNPR-FM<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>State of Nevada<\/em> that if rival builder <strong>Howard Bulloch<\/strong> got his shovels in the ground first (which he seems to have done) the <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> wheel would go away and quickly.
