{"id":9792,"date":"2012-10-09T16:28:23","date_gmt":"2012-10-10T00:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/?p=9792"},"modified":"2021-10-30T09:41:05","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T17:41:05","slug":"and-columbus-makes-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/and-columbus-makes-three\/","title":{"rendered":"And Columbus makes three &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fittingly, <strong>Penn National Gaming<\/strong> chose <strong>Columbus Day<\/strong> to open its newest casino, in the <strong>Ohio<\/strong> city that bears the name of the man who didn&#8217;t quite discover America in 1492. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/metro\/index.ssf\/2012\/10\/hollywood_casino_opens_in_colu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">With 3,000 slots and 100 tables<\/a>, it&#8217;s loaded for bear. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wdtn.com\/dpp\/news\/ohio\/ap_ohio\/Ohios-3rd-largest-casino-set-to-open-in-Columbus_24632768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">This will be the first instance of head-to-head competition<\/a> between a full-fledged Buckeye State casino and a racino, what with <strong>Scioto Downs<\/strong> being just a titch down the road. <strong>MTR Gaming<\/strong>, which saw its other properties take a thumping from <strong>Horseshoe Cleveland Casino<\/strong>, particularly in table win.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr.\u00a0<strong>David G. Schwartz<\/strong>, Scioto Downs&#8217; VLT revenues were already toward the low end of what&#8217;s considered acceptable, so MTR&#8217;s got good cause to worry &#8230; although its winnings were the only ones of the state&#8217;s casinos to march steadily upward across the summer months, while <strong>Horseshoe Cleveland<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/05\/30\/toledo-casino-provides-hint-of-what-awaits-columbus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Hollywood Casino Toledo<\/a><\/strong> experienced sequential declines. Against that must be set robust $246\/machine\/day slot winnings in <strong>Toledo<\/strong> and an outstanding $267\/slot\/day take in <strong>Cleveland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deutsche Bank<\/strong> analyst <strong>Carlo Santarelli<\/strong> gives the palm for loosest slots to Hollywood Toledo, by a full two percentage points. Horseshoe grossed $21 million last month, against Toledo&#8217;s nearly $13 million. Just think: <strong>Caesars Entertainment<\/strong> effectively traded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/stlouis\/news\/2012\/09\/10\/august-revenue-increases-3-percent-at.html?ana=twt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">$20 million\/month of wholly owned revenue<\/a> in <strong>St. Louis<\/strong> for one-fifth of a comparable revenue stream in Cleveland. Business acumen, thy name is not <strong>Gary Loveman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You could say Penn vs. MTR is a preliminary bout for 2014, when <strong>Pinnacle Entertainment<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>River Downs<\/strong> weighs in against <strong>Rock Gaming Caesars<\/strong>&#8216; in-progress <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6657\" title=\"Cincy rendering\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cincy-rendering.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cincy-rendering.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cincy-rendering-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Cincy-rendering-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><strong>Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati<\/strong> (<em>left<\/em>). Ditto a pair of dueling racinos (one owned by Penn) in the <strong>Dayton<\/strong> area. Then there&#8217;s next year&#8217;s peculiar slugging match, when <strong>Dan Gilbert<\/strong> and subordinate Loveman open a racino at <strong>Thistledown<\/strong>, in direct competition with Horseshoe Cleveland, in typical Caesars form. As for Penn, its Ohio expansion has cost 160 <strong>Indiana<\/strong> workers their jobs at affected <strong><!--more-->Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg<\/strong>. We all feel for them but, from a Penn&#8217;s-eye view, they&#8217;re just roadkill on the expressway of massive revenue growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile &#8230;<\/strong> back in <strong>Columbus<\/strong>, 12,000 customers &#8212; not the expected 20,000 &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/10\/08\/built-to-impress.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">stormed the casino floor on opening day<\/a>. If they needed extra incentive, <strong>Ann-Margret<\/strong> was on hand &#8212; which is a big upgrade from Toledo&#8217;s celebrity guest, <strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4994\" title=\"Kasich_John\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Kasich_John.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Kasich_John.jpg 255w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Kasich_John-127x150.jpg 127w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Kasich_John-254x300.jpg 254w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/>Jamie Farr<\/strong>. Players who had luck on their side <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/07\/31\/city-to-tax-jackpots.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">got a chance to become acquainted with the complicated formulae<\/a> by which the City of Columbus taxes your jackpot. <a href=\"http:\/\/cdcgamingreports.com\/ohios-3rd-largest-casino-opens-to-columbus-crowd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">That&#8217;s nothing compared to the 33% haircut<\/a> that Penn and Caesars are willing to take in return for having an exceptionally short-lived oligopoly on gambling, thanks to a horrendous deal they cut with Gov. <strong>&#8220;Casino John&#8221; Kasich<\/strong> (R,\u00a0). He took both companies to the cleaners, then hung them out to dry for good measure.<\/p>\n<p>Already, analysts are wringing their hands about saturation and cannibalization. However, four casinos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/05\/19\/casino-money-ready-to-flow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">for an aggregate $1.5 billion<\/a> in construction cost is good value for the dollar. You can&#8217;t build <em>one<\/em> bloody casino on the Strip for that kind of dough &#8230; although carpeted buffets appear to be a revolutionary concept in Ohio, which helps explain how they&#8217;ve saved a few pennies so far. City fathers haven&#8217;t banked any money from Columbus&#8217; casino yet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/09\/08\/citys-casino-take-will-pay-for-state-cuts-arena.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">but they&#8217;ve basically spent it already<\/a>, including a $15 million give-back to Penn, in the form of road improvements and environmental remediation.\u00a0For over a year, lobbyists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2011\/10\/12\/Consultant-report-envisions-growth-near-West-Side-casino.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">have been trying to manage expectations<\/a> of what $400 million <strong>Hollywood Casino Columbus<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/business\/2012\/09\/20\/placing-their-bets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">will do<\/a> for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/10\/08\/new-casino-a-gamble-for-west-side-neighborhoods.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">hard-hit<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/08\/04\/cota-betting-gamblers-will-roll-with-buses-to-casino.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">west side of town<\/a>. Salaries for dealers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2011\/10\/12\/Consultant-report-envisions-growth-near-West-Side-casino.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">projected at $35K-$40K, inclusive of tips<\/a>) would in a best-case scenario be competitive with white-collar jobs in Las Vegas. However, permanent casino jobs are well short of the projected 15,000: a number that sold voters on the Penn-led push. As for ancillary economic development, it&#8217;s an open question of whether casinos act as a &#8220;force multiplier&#8221; in that regard, especially since Penn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2012\/06\/19\/casino-on-west-side-might-have-hotel-as-well.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">plans to keep the hotel business for itself<\/a>. With the exceptions of <strong>Sunset Station<\/strong> and perhaps <strong>Green Valley Ranch<\/strong>, I&#8217;m hard-pressed to think of a <strong>Las Vegas<\/strong> locals casino that&#8217;s had an upscale &#8216;spillover&#8217; effect into the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7081\" title=\"M_Pool_View\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/M_Pool_View-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/M_Pool_View-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/M_Pool_View-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.lasvegasadvisor.com\/stiffs-and-georges\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/M_Pool_View.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>At the far fringes<\/strong> of the Penn empire, desperation characterizes the latest ad messaging for <strong>M Resort<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re heading south on I-15, expect to billboards proclaiming &#8220;<em>Free buffet for slot players<\/em>.&#8221; (And to think that the M buffet used to be one of the hottest tickets in town.) Still another hollers, &#8220;<strong>BUY GAS<\/strong>,&#8221; touting M as the last stop for affordable petrol this side of the <strong>California<\/strong> state line.
