Hotels and airlines are constantly looking for new ways to generate revenue, and one of their favorites is selling points directly to consumers. Think of it like “buying a bonus” on a slot machine: The general rule of thumb is, if they’re selling, you usually don’t want to be buying. But today, we will look at the prospect to buy Hilton Points and get a hotel room cheaper with points!
Never buy points simply on speculation of a future vacation
We’re willing to make an exception, though, when the deal is good enough, and Hilton is offering one now, through November 26, that is worth a look (You may need to sign in to access it.). You can buy up to 320,000 points at only 1/2 cent each. Since I value Hilton points at a minimum of 0.4 — 0.5 cents each, the price is very inexpensive.
Hilton actually has 28 properties (Hilton Brands) in Las Vegas, which gives you a lot of options in the city, but let’s look at an example from the east coast this time. In the last article about buying Hilton Points we looked at using your points at the Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas.

First locate the room you want. Check the price in cash. For example, I want four days at the New York Hilton Times Square in mid-December.
Hey, it’s Christmas season. New York is bound to be expensive if you’re paying cash.
Next, you’ll want to check the price in points:
Hey, look at that! It costs 320,000 points, which is the maximum amount that you can buy if you need the points. But in the current point sale, those points will cost you only $1,600. You’ll actually save over $1,000 on your trip if you buy the points outright and then use them to book the room. This is a great example of one angle to get a hotel room cheaper.

There are actually a couple of other pieces to this buy Hilton Points promotion that I like, although they aren’t as obvious.
First, look at the list of resort fees and taxes in the option above where you are redeeming points. Exactly. There are none. Hilton is generally very good about waiving taxes and fees on award stays, the resort fee capital of the world. I have seen them stick a few in on occasion but, for the most part, they’ll waive fees if you use points.
Second, these types of promotions often make you buy the maximum number of points available to get the best deal. Otherwise, your bonus is lower. Hilton’s is different. As long as you buy at least 10,000 points (and nobody is buying just a few thousand points, anyway), they’ll give you the full 100% bonus, whether you’re buying 20,000 or 160,000 points.
The bottom line is this: We all desire to get a hotel room cheaper and this promotion is a good enough one that if you are booking a Hilton property in the next few weeks, you should consider taking advantage of it.
