Double Mileage Bonuses
People respond to incentives. For instance, I go to work because they pay me. I buy a product that I normally wouldn’t buy because they give me a coupon. And my partner in crime, Michael Trager, proofreads these because he’s afraid of what I might say if he doesn’t. Bonuses are exciting, especially double mileage bonuses.
Here Come the Double Miles Promotions
In airlines, the promo of choice is the multiplier bonus. After the Great Recession, for instance, airlines were offering double miles. After 9/11, I actually saw some which were triple miles. Those were particularly gameable since, at the time, airlines based the number of miles you earned on how far you flew, rather than how much you spent.
And now, we’re starting to see a couple of airlines making some early salvos in the war to bring back passengers. Here’s what we’ve got so far.
Double Southwest Rapid Rewards Points — Don’t Forget to Register

Southwest has announced a double Rapid Rewards promotion on flights from now until August 31. They’re launching it in combination with a fare sale, so there might be something interesting in it for you.
One of the reasons that we like Southwest is how flexible they are, regardless of whether we’re in the middle of a pandemic. That’s not changing, although you might get a lower fare along with it, given the $49-99 one-ways.
Just don’t forget to register.
JetBlue Offers Double TrueBlue Points
JetBlue’s deal, though, might be the more interesting one for a couple of reasons.
- No registration is required. If you’ve got a JetBlue TrueBlue frequent flyer number, it’s automatic.
- The dates are more flexible. You do need to book by 6/15, but you’ll earn double points on flights through 1/4/21, so you have a lot more time to earn those points.
JetBlue points are worth about 1.5 cents each, so they’re throwing in a pretty big bonus.

Note: Due to many schedule and equipment changes during Covid-19, be aware that there might be limited availability of MINT. In addition, the “soft product” (food & beverage) might be adjusted.
American’s Summer Double Miles Promo
Another promo that requires registration. Register and book by June 30 (for travel now through September 30) and you’ll pick up double miles. A few notes:
- You can earn a maximum of 10,000 miles for the promotion.
- Bonus miles don’t count toward elite status or Million Miler status.
- You must fly on American or American Eagle medal. Codeshare partners don’t count.
