Marriott Bonvoy Promotion

In 2016, Marriott acquired Starwood Hotels, the parent of brands such as Sheraton, Westin and W. (Now Bonvoy brands) When the merger closed, it became a lodging monstrosity with unprecedented share and marketing power. And now we’re seeing the effects of that size, as Marriott’s once-proud promotions have become sad memories, devastated by the new Bonvoy program and Marriott Bonvoy Promotion. (You can read about the prior promotions here and here.)

Elevated Earning Isn’t So Elevated

The second-quarter Marriott Bonvoy Promotion, Elevated Earning, is lousy. It encompasses numerous features that I despise with very little upside possible.

  • Register for Elevated Earning by May 31 and stay between March 17 and June 14.
  • Starting with your second stay, you’ll earn 2,000 points per stay during the period. There are two things that I hate about that sentence. First, you don’t get anything extra for your initial stay in the promo period. And second, it’s not 2,000 points per night, but per stay. Remember, a stay is one check-in and one check-out. If you check in Monday and out Thursday, it is one stay but three nights. A generous promotion would be based on nights.
  • 2,000 points is lousy. I value a Marriott point at 0.5-0.6 cents, so 2,000 points is $10-12 worth of value.

But You Should Register Anyway

Of course. Rule #1 of our eight rules of points and miles is to take advantage of everything. This may be lousy, but if you’re going to be at a Marriott anyway, you might as well get the bonus points from the Marriott Bonvoy Promotion.

There is no charge to register for Elevated Earning. You may not stay at their properties during the promotion period, but it doesn’t cost you anything to sign up, no matter how lacklustre the promotion is.
