(Dramatic enough?) – Miles And Points Move That You Must Make!

Happy new year everyone! For those of you who pay attention to such things, it’s also a sad day, since your calendar elite tracker has been reset to zero. Congratulations on beginning to earn your status for 2020.

Miles and Points – Check Your Accounts!

But regardless of whether you care about status, there is one thing that you must do now: Check your accounts to keep your points and miles from expiring. While a few companies do offer a “your points never expire” policy, most companies aren’t that generous.

Typically, you have to have some sort of miles and points activity during the expiration period, which is generally 6 to 24 months, depending on the company. The word “activity” generally has a wide meaning and usually encompasses earning or redeeming any points, even if you transfer a single point into the account. Once you do so, the expiration period will reset.

A Tool To Track Your Points

If you’re not an Excel Spreadsheet geek like some of us, AwardWallet is a handy tool to put everything together and track your points.

The premise is simple: Put everything together on one site so that you have one-click access. You can list all of your account numbers on the site and it will link to the providers, allowing you to view all of your accounts on one page.

We examined how to track your points with this tool a few months ago. It might be a good time to review this article and sign-up.

Keep Points and Miles From Expiring

The Biggest Risk – Forgetting

In other words, the biggest risk you have to losing all of your points is not the difficulty in extending them, but rather, simply forgetting about them. That’s why I set the first days of January and July as times to check my accounts and make sure that I’ve done something to keep them active. Even if it’s only a few points that you never think you’ll use, what harm is there in keeping them going? You never know.
