Travel Recovery

We’re almost there. As the vaccine rollout continues, we can begin to book travel and have a genuine hope of actually being able to take those trips. We embrace the concept of travel recovery.

Few cities are recovering faster than Las Vegas. February visitation was up almost 20% sequentially from January and should continue to grow in March. We can vouch for it personally, since we’ve been doing quotes for LVA’s Luxury Travel non-stop for the past month.* I wouldn’t exactly call a rise to 42% strip occupancy a spike, but it’s certainly moving in the right direction. Hopefully, as the weather gets warmer and more people get vaccinated, the numbers will normalize eventually.

It’s NOT Just Las Vegas

It’s not just Las Vegas, of course. A few months ago, most people had written off the cruise lines for dead. Now, they’re actually talking about reopening dates, even if they’re not yet allowed to sail out of US ports. No industry has been hit harder by the pandemic than the cruise lines, who not only had zero revenue during the period but also did not receive aid from the government.

People are even returning to airports. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m thrilled to see that the number of people passing through the TSA checkpoints is increasing steadily. Rumor has it that, to welcome customers back, the agency is offering full body massages to anyone who brings a bottle of water with them.

Stay safe folks. We’re going to be wearing masks for at least a few more months, but I’m looking forward to the day when Corona is just a beer.

Other Stuff in the News…

Because I couldn’t make up some of this stuff…

  • A free Krispy Kreme donut every single day once you’ve been vaccinated. Because they want to make sure that heart disease gets you if COVID-19 doesn’t.
  • Delta is offering bonus miles toward elite status for flights this year, starting April 1.
  • Yahoo wrote about the places that Americans want to travel to after getting vaccinated. Given how long we’ve been stuck inside, I’d be happy just getting out of my own head.
  • Good news: This plane can get you from LA to Tokyo in three hours. Bad news: Every US-based airline will start off the flight by saying, “Due to the short length of this flight, there will be no beverage service.”
  • I hate resort fees with a passion, but I have to give this hotel credit for the extent they went to to try and charge one.

*And kudos to my LVA Travel partner Michael Trager, who is now on a flight and got WiFi so he could do reservations.
