Helpful Hints

I use Skyscanner to find the cheapest city pairs. Here’s a quick hint on seeing everything at once. Go to the Skyscanner homepage and enter any city pair, along with any dates that you want. You’ll get a screen like this:

Then, you’ll get the screen with your results. You should see this at the top of the page:

Here’s where it gets interesting. See that line that says “Show whole month” in the gray bar? Click on it to get to this page:

You can now see the entire month at a glance! No trying to guess which days of the week offer the best deals. Skyscanner does that for you. Pick the cheapest ones that fit your schedule and you’re off!

Fare Deals To Asia

I’m highlighting fare deals to Asia this week because it just shouldn’t be this cheap to get there. It’s under $400 in many cases, very little of which actually goes to the airlines. But that’s their problem (unless you are counting on miles from a plan that rewards you based on how much you spend.

In order to keep my partner’s life easy, I’m going to minimize the number of direct links. Fortunately, the Skyscanner tool is easy to use. Pull up any of the links below and just change the cities and dates to search.

Helpful Hint: Bargain deals usually make you stay several days and include a weekend night to get the best fares. Many of these don’t. They’ll let you turn around almost as soon as you get there. If you’re only doing the trip for the elite qualifying miles, you’ll have some great choices.

New York — Beijing: I’m seeing it for as low as $392 on Hainan Airlines. Hainan has several good partners, but is not in one of the three major alliances. If you want an alliance carrier, China Eastern (SkyTeam Alliance) is only a bit more at $464 round-trip.

Los Angeles — Seoul: Fares are as low as $388, and they’re on an alliance carrier (China Eastern). If you don’t want Skyteam miles, you can fly Air China for $420 and pick up some from Star Alliance.

Las Vegas — Shanghai: Operated on United metal, this trip will only set you back $394. Imagine that. You could lose $400 at the slots or go to Shanghai. It’s up to you.

Hat Tip: We first saw these deals at View from the Wing.
