A couple years ago the Porchlight Grille on W. Desert Inn offered a Bloody Mary that came with steak & lobster — in the glass! It was available only once a month for $20 until it was discontinued. Since then, several bars have created their own versions of “stacked” Bloody Marys, but the Porchlight’s was one of the first to come on the scene and I’ve yet to find another as elaborate. Its creator, one of the bartenders, Seanna, says she put it together after a rival dared her to outdo his pizza Bloody Mary. It was really just a BM with a slice of pizza on a stick, but she figured she had to get creative to top it and that steak & lobster would get it done. Seanna has since relocated to Brooksy’s Bar & Grill at 9295 W. Flamingo and her Lobster Mary is back.
It’s served in an oversized glass with Seanna’s homemade spicy BM mix that she calls “The Dawg that Bit Ya!”. Most of the fixin’s are above the bacon-salt rim. Here’s the line-up in the order encountered.
Off to the side:
A long Slim Jim
On a taller skewer:
A sweet cherry pepper
A shrimp
Salami slices
A mushroom
A piece of rare N.Y. strip steak
A tomato slice
Dill pickle chips
A pepperoncini
Another salami slice wrapped around a chunk mozzarella
On a smaller skewer:
A whole lobster tail
Both the shrimp and the steak are high quality, but the lobster is the star of the show. It’s a good one (served with the shell for effect, but already taken out for you) that’s bigger and better than 90% of the tails you get in the cheap steak & lobster specials in the casinos.
The lobster Mary is served on Thursdays from 6 to 11 p.m. or until they’re gone. The price is $25.
Is that a deal? Oh yeah! For one thing you won’t have to eat dinner after one of these. But you also get the drink that’s made with “three to four” shots of call vodka. The booze itself is at least $15 worth (careful, the mix is hot). It’s also something of an event, as everyone in the bar stops what they’re doing to get a look at the beast.
Aside from the drink, Brooksy’s is one of Las Vegas’ most interesting bars, built adjacent to a full-sized ice rink where you can watch competitive hockey games in action through a big picture window. This place also makes one of the best pizzas in town (especially the veggie versions) and all are half price starting at midnight.
For video poker players there’s a decent 7/5 Bonus Poker game, with wheel spins on quad 5-Ks from 2 to 5 p.m. and 4 to 7 a.m. daily. That combo puts the return above 99%, and if you play enough, you might even get that Lobster Mary comped.
