Other Mama
3655 S. Durango Dr., 702-463-8382
Upscale food in a cool and relaxed atmosphere is the formula that’s made Other Mama perhaps the most talked about restaurant in Las Vegas since opening a year ago. Do you want to meet a local? Grab a seat at the bar and see who shows up—a chef from another restaurant, a casino exec, a group of girls getting ready to hit the town. Everyone wants to eat here.
Other Mama is described as a sushi and raw bar, which is apt. But while owner Dan Krohmer is a classically trained sushi chef, his culinary interests run in many directions. Some of the things we’ve eaten at OM are grilled wild Mexican shrimp ($17) with a side of kimchee fried rice ($7), seafood hot pot ($21), spicy Yuzu chicken wings ($13), beef carpaccio ($16), and oyster foie Rockefeller ($15). A Nigiri sushi tasting of seven pieces is $19. That’s fairly expensive at $2.71 per piece, but this is top-grade fish prepared by talented sushi chefs. Be sure to check the specials board, where you’ll find selections you probably haven’t seen elsewhere, e.g., live scallopy ($14) or an amazing king mackerel salad ($15). If the exotic fare doesn’t jazz you, go the safe route with organic chicken or New York Strip, both under $30.
There’s also something of a cocktail culture going on, with fancy concoctions labeled with women’s names like Cordelia, Florence, and Trixie (the latter being a mix of Jameson, canton ginger, lemon, and cayenne) served side by side with good ole PBR. Don’t worry, the staff will guide you. From the servers to the manager, who goes by “English” (his last name), to Dan himself who’s in the kitchen at least five days a week—they all make you feel like you’re one of their regulars. As a bonus, Other Mama is celebrating its one-year anniversary with $1 oysters and $1 draft Pabst through April 17. Every day a different variety of oyster will be selected for the special. Other Mama is open daily from 5 to 11 pm. Just get on Spring Mountain and head west from the Strip for about seven miles, then take a left on Durango.
