3650 Las Vegas Blvd. North, 702-644-1220
Sometimes you just have to wonder what you’ve been paying attention to. And wonder we did when we recently “discovered” the Hitchin’ Post. This place has operated in various incarnations in North Las Vegas since 1953 and we were only marginally aware of it (it was listed in all three editions of our book Eating Las Vegas, but we’d never dropped in to give it a try before now.
It’s billed as a saloon and steakhouse and the description is mostly apt, although the restaurant is really more of a steakroom (a small but completely enclosed area off the bar). No matter, this is a classic value play, with five steak choices all under $19: 16-ounce porterhouse $18.95, 16-ounce rib eye $16.95, 6-ounce sirloin $14.95, 8-ounce New York strip $11.95, and 8-ounce flat iron $11.95. Dinners come with two sides and a roll, and you can add a fresh salad that’s big enough to share for $2.50. All are good cuts and ours were cooked perfectly to order. We tried three of the five steaks and it’s difficult to pick a best, but the flat iron is the front-runner at that price. There’re also several sandwich choices, and a half-pound Angus burger is $9.25. Not a lot on the menu isn’t beef, but they also serve a good fish & chips for $9.95.
The customers might be residents of the RV park, local regulars, or airmen from nearby Nellis, but whoever they are, they all get along like family in this friendly place, and a big part of the charm is the place itself. It’s something of an old ranch, with an adjoining Hitchin’ Post RV Park and even a Hitchin’ Post Hotel. In the back there’s an outdoor patio with tables and a horseshoe pit and drink prices are dirt cheap in the saloon. You have to follow Las Vegas Blvd. north a couple miles past the Silver Nugget to get there. The restaurant is open 6 am to 10 pm, and bar food is served 24/7.
