No doubt about it, the situation in the title will be uncomfortable for everyone in the room and last night it happened. Marc-André Fleury returned to a place where he is loved to this day, a place where he played 192 games during the team’s first 4 seasons, winning 117 of his career-total 502 games, the 3rd most in NHL history. He led the Vegas Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup Final in his first year here, which made the love affair that this city has with Flower off the charts.
The real question is who was more uncomfortable in last night’s Chicago win over the VGK by a score of 2-1?
Was it the 18,367 at T-Mobile who weren’t sure how to act, or who to cheer for? Or was it the VGK players who seemed completely uninterested in playing this game against their friend, whom they called Dude when they weren’t calling him Flower.
Fleury was without a doubt the heart and soul of the VGK on and off the ice. Truth be told, to many he still is. And that was on full display when the final buzzer sounded and the entire arena for the most part stood and cheered for him as he picked up a pink flower thrown onto the ice for him. He stopped and acknowledged the crowd and the crowd acknowledged him and what he did and what he has represented over the past 4 years. It will be a moment that will never be duplicated and if you were there, you’ll always remember how a city that some believe is just a place with neon lights and no memories or a soul showed exactly what love and loyalty are. Last night, Las Vegas wore their heart on their sleeves for all to see, especially the opponent’s goaltender.
In my opinion, yes, the players were the most uncomfortable. They were put in this position back on July 27 of last year when Fleury was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for virtually nothing. Like any divorce, there were different sides and opinions, including the players. Of course, publicly, their lips are sealed. They have no choice. This is a team game and a fractured locker room would be devastating to a team that has its eyes completely focused on winning the Stanley Cup.
But Fleury’s $7 million-dollar salary was in the way of the Cup, especially for a team that had its sights set on Jake Eichel here as the missing piece to the Stanley puzzle, while also re-signing Alec Martinez on defense.
The game and the hype surrounding it never materialized—no acrobatic saves we’ve all gotten used to when 29 is in the net, no multiple lead changes that would have the fans on the edge of their seats, and no chance for a Fleury shutout, which I’m sure some VGK fans who hated the way he was treated by the organization would have loved to see. But Ben Hutton’s point shot snuck by Flower early in the first period on just the 3rd shot he faced, ironically Hutton’s first goal as a VGK. It was also the one and only goal that Fleury would let by him as the opposing goaltender at T-Mobile.
With last night’s loss, the VGK have now lost 3 of their last 4 games after winning 7 of their last 8. They seem out of sync recently and last night’s emotionally charged game didn’t help their cause. They looked good against the Rangers, but New York looked like a completely different team than the one I saw back east in mid-December. The Rangers arrived in Las Vegas on Tuesday for their Thursday night game and maybe, just maybe, a case of the Vegas Flu was in the air. This is pure speculation on my part, but going out for some late-night milkshakes could have been the problem. The VGK that we saw last night looked a lot like the way the Rangers looked on Thursday night: wanting to get this game in their rear-view mirror.
Other game notes and quotes.
“It was weird, obviously,” Fleury said post-game. “They’ve got a few new guys that I haven’t practiced with, but with all the guys I played hockey with every day pretty much for the past four years, it’s sometimes a bit of a mind game, because I know what they like to do and they know I know. Sometimes you overthink stuff but obviously, they’re a very good team, very talented.”
Then there was this. “It was good to get it out of the way quick,” he said about his video tribute, in which you could see the tears in his eyes. “Obviously, it’s just a few images and videos, but a lot of memories come through seeing that. I was really fortunate to have a great time here in Vegas. “I just wanted to say thank you to the fans for an amazing four years. They were awesome and I’m glad I got to say my thanks.”
Last night’s game was Fleury’s 906th in the NHL, which ties him with Glenn Hall for 7th most in NHL history.
With last night’s victory, Fleury has defeated all 32 NHL teams. A very exclusive honor to say the least.
My 3 stars of the game: Marc-Andre Fleury (the person), Marc-Andre Fleury (the goaltender, who stopped everything he faced except a shot he never saw from the point), Marc-Andre Fleury (the legend — most loved and admired VGK player today and most likely forever)
Next game is Tuesday January 11th at T-Mobile vs. Toronto at 7 p.m. After this game, the VGK will be off for 6 days.

Barbara, I don’t live in Pittsburgh, Vegas or Chicago either, but I agree with you.

Does anyone know who actually put this video together? Management? Individual? Group?
Gloria
The VGK organization puts these videos together when players who played for the VGK return for the first time.

Thanks, Joe.

You could tell the Knights were happy to see Fleury but seeing him in the other net definitely threw them off a lot. You could tell he’d missed us, too.
Mike A. Spencer I could not agree more if you watch the video, you can see that Marchessault almost looks like he is ready to cry. I’m telling you they didn’t want to beat him last night.

Great comments as usual. We watched the game on TV, and I think I can sum up the Knights play in one word—— uninspired.
Nick Steffen I would never suggest a team would not give their best effort, but last night that was a close as possible to a throw away game from his friends on the team.

Hey Joe, thank´s for the recap. I couldn´t watch the game on any swedish channel so your recap and a condenced game video on the NHL.com is all I´ve got to get a grip on this memorial game.
All the comments on your blog and other sites makes what happened in the game is to be secondary to what Fleury did for the VGK.
I loved him too for what he brought to a new franchise, but now it´s time to go on and stand by the “new guy” in goal.
Talking about a marriage that broke up and a divorce is too much for me. Maybe it´s time to move this franchise to Reno, if you get my drift?
If you think a bit further in the season and the Knights miss the playoffs just because Vegas lost to Chicago in a tearful comeback for Fleury. It´s the freaking NHL, not an exhibition game in september!
I´ve seen Chicago play against Calgary, and the were so bad that there were no way Vegas could lose against them even with Fleury in goal.
You all can see were I´m coming from, I´m a coldhearted Swede with no feeling for “Showbiz”.
If that´s what you think you haven´t read my comments on this blog. They are possibly too long to read in this Twitter-climate world.
If I lived in Las Vegas I would have a season ticket and my own blog. My feelings for VGK are on that level.
In a perfect world I would have done something together with Joe Pane, my mentor in the world of The Vegas Golden Knights.
Go VGK GO!
Kenneth
My job security is at risk here if you and Eva decide to move to Las Vegas. Your analysis on these VGK games is usually spot on with a splash of Swedish humor to boot. If you decide to stay across the pond, at least a trip to Las Vegas should be on your bucket list. I will “HOOK” you up with some seats if you come to see a VGK game at T-Mobile.
Joe P.
Your kind words makes me blush like after the first day in Las Vegas if we meet there.
What would a trip to “the Strip” be without you Pane. (Sorry!) 🤐🤦♂️
Our lives are in the hands of Covid-19. We will do the trip over the “pond” if the chemists invent a vaccine that makes it safe enough.
The top of the bucket list would be meeting you in person.
Watching a game with VGK at “The Fortress” are a must. Being at a pressconference after a game would be an icing on the cake.
Joining you in the penaltybox for the HOOKing would be hilarious. It isn´t impossible when remembering all strange penalties the
ref´s giving the VGK over the years.
Oh, I did forgot one thing. Watching you and Eddie send an episode of your podcast “Hockey Knights in Vegas”.
Eva would love to take part in everything above plus a visit to a Casino.
As a young wonderful woman she visited the casino of Monte Carlo.
As a beginner I wouldn´t take part in any kind of hazardous play. I would be at risk of leaving the casino through the backdoor of the garage wearing only my underwear if I tried to be a Joe Pane wannabee.
If there´s any room left in the bucket we`ll trust you to fill it up.
Kenneth
I await you and Eva’s arrival; the bucket is empty right now but trust me we will fill it up. Be warned being seen with me anywhere close to a blackjack table may cause you to be labeled as a “WISE GUY” which has nothing to do with your wise knowledge of hockey

As I wrote it was an uncomfortable position for the fans who have been torn about the departure of Flower. The VGK players as I explained also looked like they did not want to be there facing their friend and former leader. The video tribute which I have included at the end of this article was moving and after the final buzzer the reception Fleury received was special for a special man and a special hockey player no matter what hockey sweater he is wearing.

Perfectly said!
As usual Joe Pane, you hit the nail on the head. My feelings exactly. Why is it we have to accept that these trades are all because it’s a “business” and the Stanley Cup is the only thing that matters? No loyalty is a real shame. IMHO
Barbara
Unfortunately, the Stanley Cup is all that matters, personal feelings, loyalty all takes a back seat. It’s a business that takes no prisoners and just moves on, never looking back in the wake they have caused. Sad but true
Joe P.
Barbara Trube Landes responded to me
Joe Pane it seemed different when the NYI won their 4 Stanley Cups. Players seemed to be the same. Guess winning the Cup(s) was the difference. I know you’re a Ranger fan, sorry to bring up that subject. I only got to be a hockey fan after 1979 when I remarried. Moved here in 1989 and was devastated that I would miss the Islanders games. Thanks for reminding me that the Almighty Cup is the focus of all following hockey.
Barbara Trube Landes you just had to mention the NY Islanders and then follow it up with I know you’re a NY Ranger fan 🙂. But the 1980s were a lot different than today’s NHL. Players played their entire careers with the same team for the most part. There was no salary cap and wait for it ……….. the NY Islanders were called the “Fish Sticks” with that god ugly jersey 🙂
Joe P.
Barbara Trube Landes responded
Joe Pane we liked that Jersey.
Barbara
If the NHL held a contest for the ugliest jersey ever worn in the NHL, the NY Islanders jersey with the fisherman’s head on it that looked like Stan Fischer would win hands down 🙂
Joe P.
Barbara Trube Landes added this to our back and forth on how hockey has changed
Joe Pane not having watched hockey for a long time didn’t realize there was such a dramatic change. We did haven season tickets to the Las Vegas Thunder but that’s a whole different puck game.
Barbara Trube Landes you see transported NY Islander fans and NY Rangers can coexist especially during a pandemic where we are obligated to keep our distance. 🙂
Joe P.
Barbara Trube Landes responded
Joe Pane we talk to anyone that has a NY jersey. No discrimination. Know a little of former NY’ers that were Ranger fans. Even back on LI we watched Ranger/Islander games together with a neighbor who was an avid Ranger fan. He also lives in Vegas now.
Barbara Trube Landes of course I’m joking I never hated NY Islander fans, but I did want to punch a few in the nose in my younger years.
Joe P.
Barbara Trube Landes added this to our NY Islander/NY Ranger saga
Joe Pane I’m not surprised. My husband took my son to a game at MSG. My son wore his Islander jersey. He’s still alive.
Carol Ohl had this to say
We miss flower.
Marilyn Rafkin Gibson had this opinion on the picture of Flower and Lehner at center ice before the game
This was an awesome moment
He played for 4 years only. It’s not like he was there for years and years. Welcome to the real world of sports Las Vegas. Players will get traded, move or ask for trades. It’s part of the sporting world. If Fleury is like a god for only 4 years then I am curious to see what players who end up playing for 5-10 years are going to be looked upon. Fleury is a good goalie he’s but is he top 5. Not at all.
Barbara Trube Landes He must have had a guardian angel with him. MSG back in those days were dangerous territory for a NY Islander fan. But the worst place for a visiting team fan is in Philadelphia.

Great article as always. I thought the tribute wasn’t as bad as it could have been. But after VGK through Marc-Andre Fleury away. Every time I see Bill Foley’s commercial where he says trust is important and it makes me cringe. Marc Andre Fleury trusted him when he said you’re the face of our franchise and we need you here. Yes, it’s a business but in my opinion, it was a poor business decision to let Marc-Andre Fleury go
Mary Becker that is so true, I think the same thing when I see him walking through his vineyards saying trust is important.
