Local Corner—Jackpot Bar and Grill

A lot of bars in Las Vegas have 24-hour kitchens. The food tends to be good and they’re always handy as late-night dining options. They’re also relatively similar, so when we find one that stands out, we like to shine a light. What makes Jackpot different is that the owner also owns the Aloha Kitchen restaurants around town and the menu is more varied than usual, including several island specialties.

Breakfasts are all priced around $10, with choices of traditional eggs/meat platters, omelets, Benedicts, longaniza (Filipino, similar to chorizo and linguiça), and loco moco (Hawaiian). Two excellent choices are the Jackpot Benedict and the huevos rancheros. The Benedict ($12.99) is topped with steak—advertised as six ounces, but ours was bigger—and a mild Hollandaise. The huevos rancheros uses (non-hot) spices that you don’t usually find in this dish, including a good slug of cilantro that gives it a zing. Just about everything we’ve tried here has been good, including the chicken Caesar salad ($11.88), cheesesteaks ($9.99/$10.99), slawstrami ($8.88), potstickers ($8.88), and garlic edamame ($5.99). But the clincher is the $7.77 burger & beer special. Served with fries and a stack of fixin’s, a temperature notation on the bill ensures that it’s cooked the way you want it (and if you want it rare, tell Katie behind the bar and she’ll see to it). Available 24/7, this is one of our favorite burger deals in town.

Jackpot is located about two miles from the Strip, just north of Tropicana Avenue. It’s a video poker bar that runs some decent gambling specials, including a current “pass the football” promo during Kansas City Chiefs games.

Vegas with an Edge is our catch-all blog on visiting and living in Las Vegas, in which you never know what will show up from day to day. Even we're bowled over from time to time by the posts that come from the keyboards of Jeffrey Compton (Living Local at Low Cost), Robin Camacho (Neighborhood Realty), Joe Pane (Knights on Ice), and special guests. We ourselves post under Vegas News and Updates, where we cover special events from March Madness to Mother's Day, Halloween to the Super Bowl. Check it out frequently and be surprised!
