For fans of sashimi — raw fish without the sushi rice — one of the best plays in town is at Yonaka Modern Japanese restaurant, where there are two sashimi combination plates, one for $27 and one for $58. Get ‘em both and it’s an excellent deal for two for $85.
Here’s an even better play. Other Mama on S. Durango also has two outstanding sashimi plates that cost significantly less, just $56.50 for both.
The first is a traditional mix that includes tuna, yellowtail, and octopus. It’s 20 pieces in all for $21.50.

The second is a deluxe combination with more pieces that includes uni for $35.

Other Mama used to serve nigiri sushi, but doesn’t anymore, concentrating instead in various forms of sashimi and other seafood specialties — including one of the best tuna tartares in town — along with non-seafood specialties. Every night at 10 p.m., oysters on the half shell are $1 apiece till closing.

This restaurant is within walking distance of my home, so I hit it up often. I move around the menu a bit, but it’s tough to lay off the sashimi and oysters at these price points.
