Website Update — 3/23

March 23, 2017 4 Comments Written by Anthony Curtis

You’ve probably noticed that we’re going through some launching pains. The new LasVegasAdvisor.com is a huge project that ran into a lot of barriers over several years of development and it’s still far from complete, but we’re up and running. Yep, a whole lot of things can go wrong at the outset with a project of this magnitude. I can tell you that we’re dealing with them in order of importance and also paying attention to the comments of our users.

For example, we were surprised by how many questions we received asking if we’d discontinued “Today’s News”? No we haven’t. TN continues to appear as it always has, but we discovered that there was a problem with it showing on mobile devices. That’s been rectified. However, we also realized from the feedback that it wasn’t prominent enough on the home page, so we’ve also attended to that with an altered design so that it now stands out.

Similarly, users didn’t know how to get back to the home page. On the old site you had to click the banner and the same is true on the new one, but it just doesn’t feel as intuitive, so we’ve added a home icon at the top of the page. We’ll see if that helps. If not, we’ll try something else.

The biggest problem has been the log-in process and we’ve made several changes there. There’s no getting around the fact that our new system requires that you reset your passwords, but the process wasn’t well explained. It’s better now and we’re looking at making it so real names and emails don’t show up in comments and on the message boards.

Once these problems are solved, we’ll move on to others. It’ll take some time, but we should have a very solid product when these changes are implemented. I’ll post periodic updates here to let you know what we’re working on and where things stand.

    Hi Everyone,
I love the new design, thanks for the hard work. I check the site pretty much every day for the news and QOD, even when I’m traveling outside the US, which leads to my comment. I take a mini (7″) tablet with me when I’m on the road, and some of the ads on the redesigned site cover the right edge of the content of Today’s News. What’s worse is some of the ads cannot be closed.

I know, I know, my life is pretty darn good when all I have to complain about is a few blocked words, but I thought I’d let you know. Ciao!

Hi Susan, Glad you like the new redesign! We are going to be working on the mobile design very soon and all input is greatly appreciated. I am going to reach out to our Ad manager to see if they can fix this asap.

From the home page, scroll down to “Quick Links” on the right side of the page and click “Forums.” We’re adding an easier exit from this page, but for now you can click the icon at the upper right that says “Powered by LasVegasAdvisor” to get to the home page.

Vegas with an Edge is our catch-all blog on visiting and living in Las Vegas, in which you never know what will show up from day to day. Even we're bowled over from time to time by the posts that come from the keyboards of Jeffrey Compton (Living Local at Low Cost), Robin Camacho (Neighborhood Realty), Joe Pane (Knights on Ice), and special guests. We ourselves post under Vegas News and Updates, where we cover special events from March Madness to Mother's Day, Halloween to the Super Bowl. Check it out frequently and be surprised!
