I’m at a point where I only bring what I’m willing to lose on that particular session. In the past I would bring a lot (for me) and if I hit a bad run and saw how much I was losing I would [perhaps mistakenly] quit because “I didn’t want to lose that much”. So I totally understand where that woman was coming from mentally. My solution, as stated was to bring what I was willing to part with that session.

Also, it could be that this woman doesn’t keep her gambling money separate from her “life money”. I’ve run into that with a lot of people who will say things like “i had to do x so I couldn’t play”. Well “x” money shouldn’t be on the table anyway.

“Helen asked me how much I would put in. I was basically concentrating on my game but told her, “I always put in $1,000.”

“But I only need to play $600 more,” she responded.

“I would put in a grand.”

“Well, I’m not going to do that,” she told me. “I don’t want to lose that much!”

I’d probably have just put in a few hundred as well. Not because I’d be afraid of losing, but because that’s all it will usually take to play the 60 hands. Sure, if a had a large TITO at the ready, I’d use that instead, as inserting one thing is faster than the other.

This illustrates a common misperception. Actually, all money is fungible. It doesn’t really matter if you reach some arbitrary threshold or not. It”s all one long session, then you croak. Ideally, that happens just as you’ve inserted your very last dollar, drawn to AKQJ of hearts, and gotten the 3 of clubs.

You also hear people say that they’re more willing to play because they’re ahead and thus, “playing with the house’s money.” I know of no instance where you can actually do that. If you can stick it into a machine and play it, it’s YOUR money.

Another outstanding inspirational column. Most casual players seem to like the chance to win a lot on a high variance game, but the majority of them will be sore losers when they do not hit.

Hope most players will understand video poker is an expensive hobby and have the patience it will work out in the long run.

sorry but last I checked you play the games to win based on your bank- points are pointless- they are just an added benefit the casinos give just like if you fly a plane or use a cc – the bank you have should always be your deciding factor when playing- and you should never forget to walk away when up at times- for otherwise you will always lose just chasing points-
