Churchill Downs on the rampage

Churchill Downs execs met with Wall Street analysts and laid out their strategy going forward. The look toward their ‘historical racing’ machines at their titular track as a way to increase its cash flow as well as to help support the new, trackside hotel. The latter will have suites that can be converted into luxury skyboxes, while some lesser rooms would come with personal seat licenses. “CHDN looks to its European and Japanese Road to the Derby as attracting/increasing sponsorship value, while also helping to bring well-heeled international customers to the Derby,” wrote JP Morgan analyst Daniel Politzer.

As for Churchill Downs’ controversial decision to scrap racino plans for Arlington Park, “it would look to open a Continue reading

Mark your calendars

The peppery owner of the Golden Nugget, S&G favorite Tilman Fertitta, will be signing copies of his Shut Up and Listen! at the Nugget on Sept. 28, starting at 3 p.m. He’ll only be giving autographs for an hour, so get there early.

Twin tragedies in California; Upgrades at Borgata

Yesterday was World Suicide Prevention Day (and of the innumerable politicians who try to shake me down for money, only Rep. Ilhan Omar [D] had the stones to raise the taboo topic.) As though to underline the issue, this week was marred by a tragic incident at Graton Resort & Casino. A suicidal, 24-year-old man tore himself away from sheriff’s deputies after a half-hour of negotiations and plunged five floors to his death. Geoffrey Wise Bertagnolli and his wife had apparently been living out of their car, although whether that was the cause of Mr. Bertagnolli’s desperation remains unknown. We hope the coming days throw Continue reading

Stall in Indiana; Adelson, Netanyahu at odds

An extra weekend day in Indiana was no help to casino revenues in Indiana, which were, on average, flat with 2018. The total gross was $186 million. The saving grace, perhaps, was that August 2018 saw revenues grow 5% but then why did 2019, with its additional weekend day, display even a smidge of further growth? Beneath the calm surface some dramatic swings and roundabouts were taking place, though. This was especially true of the southern tier.

Horseshoe Southern Indiana got shellacked, down 12% to $18 million, still good enough for Continue reading

Ohio gallops, Missouri trots

Ohio gambling revenues were up 4% last month, coming in at $164.5 million. Most of that was driven by a particularly good month at the racinos. Hollywood Columbus‘ $19 million represented a 4% gain while Hollywood Toledo hauled in $17 million, a 3% gain. The Columbus casino is gaining on MGM Northfield, clinging to first place with $21 million, a 3% decline. MGM’s was one of only two revenue-negative performances in the Buckeye State. Jack Cincinnati slid 3.5% to $17 million. Jack Cleveland, finally living up to its market, gained 3% to $18 million. Nearby Jack Thistledown leapt 11% to $12 million. Hollywood Dayton vaulted 13% to $12 million and Hollywood Mahoning Valley gained 8% to $11 million.

Churchill Downs had a good month at Continue reading

Squeezed in Schenectady; Seminoles step up

One of the goofs New York State made when authorizing upstate casinos was not to establish a level playing field of taxation. Rivers Casino Schenectady is hardest hit, paying 45% on its slot revenues and it’s finally decided to ask for tax relief. “If you reduced the tax rate, you may actually still provide the same, if not more, gaming revenue to the state because you’ll have more business,” says general counsel Stacey Rowland. What’s particularly irksome is that Greyhound and other bus lines are running $25 fares to MGM Springfield, which are offset by $25 in free play and $20 in food credit. Hell, for those benefits I’d hop on a bus to Springfield. “It’s very hard to compete with a Springfield when Continue reading

Lesser is more; Are you ready for some football betting?

It’s been rather vexing to hear the voices in Massachusetts squawking to have the casino-enabling legislation enacted under Deval Patrick torn up and replaced with a series of loopholes. After two years of knowing that Encore Boston Harbor was headed their way, Penn National Gaming is wailing for table games at Plainridge Park. Another developer wants a racino, even though the law stipulates only one. And Region C still lacks the authorized casino. Here’s a radical idea: Let’s let the law take its time to function as intended before we go running around with our hair on fire.

Amidst the insanity, one voice of reason has emerged, belonging to Continue reading

Maryland good, Illinois becalmed, MGM furious

Maryland‘s casino industry showed continued health last month, up 5.5%. MGM National Harbor had 40.5% of market share while Maryland Live corralled 34.5% of trade. MGM grossed $62.5 million, with low-tax table games up 10% as opposed to only 4% for high-tax slots (in other words, just as MGM likes it). Horseshoe Baltimore fell 13% to $18 million and Hollywood Perryville was off 3% to $6.5 million. Maryland Live was up 13% to $53 million, while MGM recorded a 7% gain. Ocean Downs galloped ahead 6.5% to $9 million and Rocky Gap Resort leapt 6% to $5.5 million. In West Virginia, good luck at the table (+11%) made up for a lean August at the slots (-5%). Penn National Gaming‘s racino didn’t share in the good fortune, experiencing a -14% blowout at the tables.

Out in Illinois, the overall result was flat, even with an extra weekend day, perhaps the calm before the Continue reading

‘Wynn-wash’ in Boston; MGM, Sahara soak customers

Encore Boston Harbor President Robert DeSalvio gives us the nitty-gritty (emphasis on gritty) of developing the Massachusetts megaresort. For instance, I’ll bet you didn’t know Wynn Resorts rented 600 railroad cards to—repeatedly—haul arsenic-tainted soil from the site, trucked off to Georgia, among other unfortunate recipients. Speaking of railroads, DeSalvio gently pushes CEO Matt Maddox under the train, saying that his (DeSalvio’s) focus at the time of the attempted sale to MGM Resorts International was entirely on opening Encore … and on propping up employee morale.

DeSalvio’s biggest previous accomplishment was opening Sands Bethlehem and it’s probably fair to say he Continue reading

Terrorism at Trump; Police blotter

Trump International finally made it back into the news, although not in a good way. WSOP player Kenneth Strauss was arrested there on July 27 after allegedly tweeting terroristic threats, among other malfeasances. Strauss’ reign of error began at Red Rock Resort, where he was accused of pedophilia out by the hotel pool. He was 86’d and repaired to the president’s place, where the security director “was monitoring Strauss closely.” Strauss then caromed over to The Venetian, where he was reported as threatening to kill himself or anyone who came near. The police missed Strauss there but caught up with him back at Trump Int’l.

In the meantime, his Twitter account had been busy, with such endearments as  Continue reading

Furor in Illinois; ‘Carmageddon’ in New Jersey

Charles DeGaulle was famous as The Man Who Said No. That nickname may have to be reassigned to Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen. His decision not to seek racino status for Arlington International Racecourse has set the Illinois gaming industry and political establishment on its ear. “We can’t make this work,” he said of the “financially untenable” Illinois Gaming Act. Why? One of the reasons is a tilted playing field: Racinos would have to pay a substantial surtax, to fatten racing purses, a requirement not imposed on casinos. Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes, while generally conciliatory, noted that Churchill Downs probably didn’t want to compete with itself at nearby Rivers Casino Des Plaines, of which it owns 61%.

The Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association was not so amicable. It pointed out that Arlington had been Continue reading

Osaka and Tokyo are the world’s fourth- and seventh-most livable cities according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. (Tops is Vienna.) This is great news for casino companies like Las Vegas Sands and MGM Resorts International that want to set up business in Japan and, specifically, in those cities. “The upsides of these cities tend to be fully realized. You get a good collection of cultural activities, you get good access to healthcare and education. But you don’t get a lot of downsides that tend to come with big cities, things like traffic congestion, crime problems and general wear and tear,” explained Continue reading

Stitt, tribes: “You first”; Sports betting blocked in Maine

Although he said that “we table the issue of the renewal or termination date of the exiting compact, and use our time more productively by focusing on coming to a shared vision of gaming in Oklahoma for the future,” Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt‘s spokeswoman says the governor has not budged either on the issue of compact expiration nor on raising exclusivity fees. Tribes responded, acknowledge that our compacts automatically renew and then we’ll talk.

Tribes even allow there’s a case to be made for higher fees. The fees range from Continue reading
