Illinois tries, tries again; I, robot

Here we go again. Illinois solons will once more take up the question of casino expansion in the Land of Lincoln. However, other and more pressing gambling concerns may take priority. In addition to Internet gambling there is the quick revenue fix that is sports betting. Also, legalization of daily fantasy sports is jostling for its place on the docket. That’s an ambitious slew of laws to push through the state capitol, even for indefatigable state Sen. Robert Rita (D) and state Rep. Lou Lang (D). The witness list for yesterday’s hearing was tilted against the existing casino industry, with only Casino Queen execs being called to testify.

If Rita’s SB7 comes up to a vote, it should be coupled with Amendment 3, which would ease the usurious tax rates Illinois casinos are required to pay. (It would also authorize three racinos but maybe that’s Continue reading

Tilman covets Roman empire; Bellagio turns 20

Tilman Fertitta is the maverick among mavericks in the casino industry, beating veteran operators at their own game and doing it as some one who entered the industry as a novice and immediately began to strike gold. More recently, he’s been beating the pants off the competition in New Jersey for Internet gambling. (He was the first to have live, online dealers, an experiment that paid off big time.) We’ve butted heads with Tilman a few times in the distant past but have the highest respect for him and his track record.

Now, in a David-and-Goliath scenario, Fertitta is aiming to take over Caesars Entertainment for $13/share. (The stock is one of the Continue reading

It’s Adelson’s nation, we just live here

If democracy is for sale then Sheldon Adelson appears to have the winning bid. Having already pumped $55 million into the Senate Leadership Fund and Congressional Leadership Fund earlier this year, he’s donating untold millions more in an 11th-hour attempt to swing the November elections. Apparently Adelson can afford to buy a Congress but not a convincing toupee. The pro quo to Adelson’s quid was provided by a certain “short-fingered vulgarian” (™ Graydon Carter) who put a heavy hand on the scales of Japan’s casino-selection process. “It was totally brought up out of the blue. They were a little incredulous that [Donald Trump] would be so brazen,” said one source. “After Trump told [Shinzo] Abe he should strongly consider Las Vegas Sands for a license, ‘Abe didn’t really respond, and said thank you for the information,'” reports ProPublica. What else could Abe do?

Although Adelson was rightly considered a frontrunner in the Japanese casino sweepstakes, this revelation taints Continue reading

MGM Springfield disappoints; Ruffin makes peace

Publicizing revenue expectations is a dangerous thing. Just ask the four new casinos in upstate New York. Or Bruce Deifik in Atlantic City. When you don’t make your number (the dreaded Penn National Effect) it opens you up for no end of second-
guessing. At any rate, even if Connecticut doesn’t get that third, satellite casino near Hartford it may not have much to fear from MGM Springfield. Although foot traffic at the new megaresort surpassed MGM’s expectations, gambling revenues were a different story. MGM’s target for Year One is $418 million. During its first full month of operation it grossed just a hair under $27 million, putting it on pace for $324 million, a huge disappointment by any reckoning. As CalvinAyre.com noted, this stands in stark contrast to the $42 million generated by MGM National Harbor in its first month.

Between microscopic ROI at MGM Cotai and now this, MGM Resorts International is having Continue reading

Quote of the Day

“This is mistaken and counter-productive — even dangerous. No one man or woman is or should be so vital to a company’s existence that they cannot be punished for wrongdoing. This is essentially the principle of too big to fail, brought into every corporate boardroom. If you have a reckless CEO who can’t be fired because it would hurt the company, then you don’t really have a company; you have a cult.” — David Dayen on the SEC‘s kid-glove treatment of discredited CEO Elon Musk.

Doing the right thing

Bravo to Hard Rock International and Seminole Gaming for stepping up to partner with Clean the World (which was covered in this space last week) to help victims of Hurricane Michael. According to CasinoBeats.com, “An immediate donation of 30,000 containers of soap, shampoo, shower gel, body lotion and conditioner are available for distribution to victims, emanating from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos in Tampa and Hollywood, plus the Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee, located east of Naples.” Nor is this a one-shot deal. Arkansas to vote on casinos; Baldwin leaves MGM

Driving Arkansas Forward, the ballot initiative to legalize casinos in Arkansas, will continue to proceed now that the Arkansas Supreme Court has slam-dunked two challenges to the referendum. Religious group Ensuring Arkansas Future claimed that the ballot language was too ambiguous and citizens wouldn’t know what a ‘yes’ vote entailed. Citizens for Local Choice complained that the wording was too vague. The high court wasn’t buying any of it, however. It said a ballot title “does not need to include every possible consequence or impact of a proposed measure … [it] sufficiently informs the public of the amendment’s purpose and scope and its consequences.”

Although we find the ballot language awfully restrictive, limiting casinos to Continue reading

Quote of the Day

“To me, the amazing thing that stuck out in the [G2E] session was that hardly anybody is doing any type of spot rewarding of players while on property. They are all focused almost 100% on simply sending out rewards to try to drive a trip, but not rewarding players while on property to drive longer visits or more spend.” — Raving Consulting‘s Steve Browne on his Global Gaming Expo experience.

Punishing month in Atlantic City

Gross-gaming revenues (not counting Internet play) were up 8% in Atlantic City last month, to $232 million. However, the prosperity wasn’t citywide, with same-store revenues down 11%. We’re still a long way from agreeing with Roger Gros‘ doom-and-gloom-and-doom prediction that two casinos will close this year but this gives him grist for his mill. Still, slots were up 8.5% and table games 5.5%. (Poker took a beating, down 15.5%.) Borgata ($60.5 million) was hammered, with table win plunging 25.5%, That dragged the casino’s performance down 13.5%, as slot win fell 8% too. The Caesars Entertainment portfolio tumbled 13.5%. Broken out by property, it was $23 million (a 23% dive) at Caesars Atlantic City, $27 million (a 14% declivity) at Harrah’s Resort and $17 million (down 6.5%) at Bally’s. Interesting that the grind joint (Bally’s) suffered least against the new competition.

Resorts Atlantic City took an 11% trim, to $16 million, while the Golden Nugget slipped 3% to $18 million. Only the Tropicana Atlantic City held steady, grossing Continue reading

Florida amendment fading; Wynn Boston Harbor widens its appeal

All of Disney Worldwide Services‘ horses and all of the Seminole Tribes‘s men may not be able to get Humpty Dumpty, er, Amendment 3 past the ballot box. The amendment, which would make gaming expansion subject to direct popular vote, has 54% support at the moment. Trouble is, it needs 60% to become law. The means, despite having spent $36 million to date, Disney and the Seminoles still have to make their case to the 18% of voters who are undecided. The bad news (for proponents) comes as opponents are upping their game, despite inferior financing. Citizens for the Truth About Amendment 3 has $6 million in the kitty and Vote NO on 3 only $981,832. This race is going down to the wire and we expect it to be decided by the thinnest of margins — but not by the size of one’s bank account.

Indiana fails to impress; Big setback for non-smokers

It’s too soon to say that regional gaming’s economic honeymoon is over but Indiana was down 4% last month, grossing $177.5 million. (It was up 6% this time last year.) Penn National Gaming‘s Hollywood Lawrenceburg took a 15% header, grossing $13 million. Caesars Entertainment‘s two new racinos didn’t impress, with Hoosier Park up 1.5% ($16 million), while Indiana Downs was flat at $20.5 million. Horseshoe Southern Indiana grossed $19.5 million, a 10% stumble. Horseshoe Hammond took in $32 million (glass half-full) but slipped 7% (glass half-empty). Ameristar East Chicago, however, was up 4% to $18 million.

Belterra was up 1.5% to $9.5 million. Blue Chip Casino took a 7% hit, grossing $13 million, while Majestic Star was off Continue reading

Churchill Downs stands pat; Borgata honored at G2E

JP Morgan analyst Daniel Politzer met with top execs from Churchill Downs and found a company pretty satisfied with where it is now. It “has yet to see any cracks in fundamentals at its regional casino properties or among its customer base. Management is upbeat on the company’s growth trajectory and is confident it can continue running its casinos at an efficient pace; it views its casino portfolio as underappreciated given the pace of both revenue growth … and EBITDA growth.” Management was skeptical of the trend to split companies into REITs and operating companies. Churchill Downs likes owning its real estate.

As for mergers and acquisitions, “seller expectations remain high” and “a transaction would need to Continue reading

SLS gets new look; Automation targets women, minorities

Alex Meruelo has begun exorcising the unclean spirit of Sam Nazarian from SLS Las Vegas. In a giant gesture of faith, Meruelo will invest $100 million in a property makeover, starting with those oh-so-excessively-trendy hotel rooms. Next week Meruelo will get around to the much-criticized casino floor and to Nazarian’s pride and joy, the pool complex. Speaking of purgations, the Las Vegas Review-Journal has finally gotten around to dropping the de riguer practice of referring to the myopic Nazarian as a “visionary” every time his name was mentioned. Thank you. Now could we please put the “Sahara” name back on the casino, Mr. Meruelo?

Ohio up, Missouri down and Caesars tries harder

Although it will forever be a mystery why Caesars Entertainment evacuated Ohio, now that gaming revenues in the Buckeye State are on the upswing, it’s understandable that CEO Mark Frissora would want to get back in. Last month, gross gaming revenues were $152 million, a 4% increase, powered by an 8% improvement at the racinos. (Casino business was static.) Penn National Gaming‘s Hollywood Toledo was flat at $16 million, while Hollywood Columbus slid 5% to $17.5 million. But Hollywood Dayton was up 2.5% to $8.5 million and Hollywood Mahoning Valley jumped 5.5% to $10 million.

Dan Gilbert‘s on-the-auction-block Jack Entertainment properties were led by Jack Thistledown, up 10% to $10 million. Jack Cincinnati had a good month, up Continue reading

Wisdom from G2E; Sisolak lights up

This week’s Global Gaming Expo gives Wall Street analysts plenty of time to sniff around the big gaming operators and manufacturers, trying to suss out trends. Credit Suisse analyst Cameron McKnight, the new kid on the block, says that 3Q18 weakness was “a blip … driven by a ‘perfect storm’ of: (1) Very tough comps from two ‘supercharged’ Summers in 2016 and 17, (2) Much higher mix of Leisure and price sensitive [online travel agency] customers, (3) Mid-week July 4 holiday, and (4) Continued impact of October 1.” He also notes “continued rate pressure at the lower end of the market, especially from lower rates at Park MGM and continued weakness in the vicinity of Mandalay Bay.”

On the other hand, “Regional operators are bullish, given record low unemployment, tightest labor market in 20 years, consumer confidence at 20-year highs, and continued Continue reading

Mashpee in for fight of their lives

“Thank God that’s not the test of whether or not people have rights in this country or not, whether or not they pass your look test.” That’s what then-Rep. George Miller (D) said to Donald Trump when the latter was railing against “so-called Indians” before Congress. “You’re saying only Indians can have the reservations, only Indians can have the gaming, so why don’t you approve it for everybody?”, Trump asked. Now he is in the White House, his Secretary of the Interior has taken land out of trust for the first time since the Termination Era (1946-1975) and the Mashpee Wampanoag find themselves outside looking in. The Termination Act was a bit of Harry Truman administration policy to try and force Native Americans to assimilate by dissolving their reservations. As erstwhile Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R) put it, “If you can’t change them, absorb them until they simply Continue reading

Silverton: Pahrump or bust; Bluhm yanks application

Next stop, Pahrump. That’s where Silverton hopes to be heading, proposing Silverton Ranch just off State Route 160. “We like the growth of the area … and we like the Death Valley component, with the number of tourists and tour buses that pass through. We have current customers and employees of Silverton that live in Pahrump, so we thought it would be fun to build an extension of the Silverton brand there” Silverton President Craig Cavileer told the Pahrump Planning Commission. We don’t think casinos do things just for fun, so obviously the metrics of this project look good for owner Ed Roski and his gaming braintrust. If approved, the casino would have five table games, 250 slots and a 125-room hotel. In other words, Silverton management is moving forward prudently.
