954 Cardinals - 130 JUPITER, Fla. — The St. Louis Cardinals will get featured-game treatment this afternoon as their game against the New York Mets goes national on ESPN. With one notable absence, they’ve also got a lineup that could pass for opening day at Cincinnati.
Chris Carpenter, the presumptive opening day starter (manager Tony La Russa loves to play coy with this announcement every spring), will make his penultimate start of spring training. Behind him is a rather representative Cardinals’ lineup. In front of him … is Jason LaRue, as Yadier Molina starts his recovery today from an oblique strain.
The lineup:
1. Skip Schumaker, 2B
2. Felipe Lopez, 3B
3. Albert Pujols, 1B
4. Matt Holliday, LF
5. Colby Rasmus, CF
6. Ryan Ludwick, RF
7. Brendan Ryan, SS
8. Jason LaRue, C
9. Chris Carpenter, P
From here on the Cardinals are going to go with a free-form bullpen. Pitchers will be available on the days their scheduled to pitch, sure, but otherwise they are going to try to treat each late-game situation as if it were the regular-season. They will avoid using pitchers two days consecutive — at least for a few more days — so that means rookie Adam Ottavino is live today for his second relief appearance, if needed.
Will be back shortly with a Molina update.
