Another National TV Game screw job - usual outcome Miami-Maryland Well, the football season has arrived and those wait til the last play of the game type outcomes for those who wager on football. Classic one game on the board as Maryland ends up a 3 or 4 point favorite, and pulls out a late, late, late cover with its new head coach Randy Edsall screaming for his senior CB to go down and not run into the end zone for the cover with the pick 6...... Nothing like those TV games folks....
Pretty bad. And I'm not buying that the two guys who didn't even try to tackle him on the return had reasoned that letting him score gave them a chance.
I think this is just the world we now live in. It is the "me" generation and I dont think you can get a kid, high school, college or pro, to give up the personal glory for the team. He got on ESPN. No different than they now always try to pick the ball off on 4th down even if it means that knocking it down gives the team a lot more yardage. Pros playing for contract incentives, college to get in pro etc etc. Until a coach seriously disciplines a kid for a selfish action or there is a pro clause where there are consequences there will be no change. At least the coach knew what to do. Half the time it seems they are clueless as well.
Coach knew the proper play, so I give him credit, but you can't blame the kid. He's not getting paid a dime and he has a chance to score on national TV. C'mon, cut him some slack. Being that excited, all he's thinking about is the end zone. I don't call that selfish - that's called being an excited kid. Unless the coach specifically told his entire defense to go down and NOT advance any turnover, you can't crucify the guy. Look, Miami deserved to cover, but don't blame the Maryland DB. What happened there is just bad luck - a bad beat. What Westbrook did for Philly, falling down before the goal line (maybe 2 years ago?), is a PROFESSIONAL move. He also makes a few million $$$ a year. These kids aren't pros, they're kids. I still remember a playoff game where SD picked off Tom Brady and the defensive guy fumbled it back to New England and cost them the game. Now that's a costly blunder - and SD (I think?) had the top seed in the AFC that year. It might have cost them a Super Bowl trip, as they would have had home field throughout the playoffs. If you're a Charger fan, that's one to pull your hair out over - not this.

Was not a bad beat for me as I had Miami in a tease so I am commenting with no dog in the fight from a $$ perspective. I agree with you that I am probably being too hard on the kid as he is probably not smart enough to know what to do. But the coach should have told them although Im sure that there are lots of other more pressing things to discuss in that situation. I will tell you that I sure remember when I was playing ball that I was always taught know what you are going to do with the ball if it comes to you BEFORE the play starts. I do believe though that even if the kid know the proper thing to do was hit the ground he would have still tried to score but thats just my personal opinion and we all know what those are worth. :)
