AARP--the sound a sea lion makes when it vomits, or a source of good deals

There are times when you just want a humble, decent, and decently priced meal. Likewise, sometimes you just want a place to rest your weary head, and don't want to pay fancy prices. An AARP membership will get you:

A 15% discount at Denny's

A 10% discount at Motel 6

These discounts apply everywhere in the country. Vegas has several Dennys and Motel 6's. An AARP card costs about $20 a year, so let's calculate what Joe and Jane Gambler can save in one swell foop:

Breakfast for two at Denny's: $35. Discount: $5.25

One night at Motel 6: $80. Discount: $8

The card is already almost paid for.

There are other discounts that the card can get for you, including auto insurance. I also got a Netflix deal.

Now, you may pooh-pooh at this and consider both Motel 6 and Denny's far too plebeian for a Vegas vacay. But as always, money you don't spend on food and lodging can be spent on fun stuff. And as far as food and lodging goes, I personally sometimes just need to refuel rather than anything goomay, and most of the time, my hotel room is my crash pad, not my luxury refuge.

Anyone 50 or older can join AARP.

They have a discount to Outback Steakhouse as well.

AARP rates on rental cars usually beat Costco.   Their BCD code with Budget gets you 10% off and you can combine that with a coupon code.

They also have a senior menu with good deals, and you can still apply the AARP discount.

No disagreement here. I've been AARP for a couple years now. I do have to say the absolute worst breakfast I've ever had was at the Denny's by Harrah's.

You can also use your AARP card to buy up to 5 discounted gift cards a month on the website. Until recently I was saving $10 a month buying Google Play gift cards from them to pay for YouTube TV. They stopped selling those, but they have a lot of other ones, including 8% off Golden Nugget cards.

Good to know.  When in Vegas and want Denny's, we go to the one on Maryland, across from the Sunrise Hospital.  I mention the hospital as a landmark, not because you'll need it.  The food at this Denny's, as well as the one at the Edgewater in Laughlin, has been pretty good.

Well, the absolute worst gambling I've ever experienced was at the Harrah's by Denny's, so maybe there's a pattern there :). Oh, and the worst show.

You can get gift card discounts for Carnival brand cruise lines. Holland America etc.
