Aloha Hawaiian Grill gone

Aloha Hawaiian Grill (at the Plaza) just went out of business, yesterday was their last day. So much for that coupon, and so much for my lunch.

I've always wondered what makes that Hawaiian fast food shtick so special. Basically, Hawaiian food is a) Spam and a pile of rice with gravy on it (loco moco), and some grilled meats, b) Asian food, primarily Japanese, and c) fantastic local seafood. The fast food joints only offer a). There are also places that offer poke.

Hawaii is one of those places where you have a much better experience if you live like a local. Hawaiian food is really nothing like what those fast food places offer. And now I want some shaved ice with coconut.

Oh by the way! On the concourse between the Cal and MSS--so, not far from where you were--is the best ice cream on the planet: Lappert's, a Hawaiian chain. Macadamia ice cream...mmm...

I always meant to try them but never got around to it. Too late now,

Interesting, I wonder what's going on at the Plaza food court.  McDonalds is also closed, now has slot machines posted there.

Kevin, Hawaiian food can be very good; Pan-Asian with some Polynesian and Portuguese elements.  Aloha Specialties (at the Cal) is probably the best place for it in Vegas (and yeah, Lappert's, across the hallway, is a terrific option for ice cream, they're out of Honolulu).  The place at the Plaza was pretty good, not nearly as good as Aloha Specialties (which is always crowded).

Oh, I agree that it can be very good. It's just that the fast-food iterations of it are a pale shadow of the actual thing--because actual Hawaiian cuisine contains lots of seafood and leans heavily on Japanese influences--which are things these "Hawaiian BBQ" joints don't do.

For that matter, why aren't there hardly any Japanese fast food joints? Japanese food is ideal for quick takeout. Maybe too many oldsters remembering Pearl Harbor, or something?
