Did anyone else get this offer from GSR?

They sent me an offer for two free nights, $100.00 in Free Play and a choice between two concert tickets and a VP tournament entry with a food credit. It is one of the best offers any casino has ever sent me.

I booked it for the weekend that Kris Kristofferson is playing. My BIL really wants to see the concert. It happens to be on my birthday, but I am not a big fan. So, I plan to give the tickets for the concert to Sis and BIL.

I have very little history with Grand Sierra Resort. I went there more when they were Reno Hilton and I have never stayed on that property. So, I thought I would also ask those who are familiar to share your thoughts on staying, playing and eating there.

I live about 3 hours away and spent a weekend there about two months ago. Before it was the Reno Hilton, it was the MGM. My guess is that it was built in the early 70's. I got a mailer for $50 free play and two free nites or I could "upgrade" my room to a "suite" for $25 more.

I paid the extra dough based on some not too flattering reports (maybe it was trip advisor) about the standard rooms. I didn't have a chance to see what a standard room was but they told me the "suite" had new carpet, tile in the bathroom, nicer furniture etc.

It was OK but certainly not up to Vegas standards. The hallways were dark, the rooms were dark and for me it was trying to dress up an older room and I thought a little on the gaudy side. Clean enough and quiet enough but if I were you, I might ask to see what the standard room was like.

I had both nights comped anyway as I think the coin in was only about $5000 a day. The "VIP" club is down past the check in as you have to go here to get your free play loaded.

There is a big mixture of good/bad VP machines right next to one another but as I recall, the VP at the bar was pretty decent. Hope you have a great time.

Thanks for your input, Ted. I looked on their website and found some pictures of a standard room. It appears to be comfy and clean at least. I think it will be fine for my purposes.
I don’t think I’ll be using the VIP club, but it’s good to know, just in case. I’m sure I’ll have a good time.

Thanks again

My advice would be to stay at the GSR, but put most of your play in at the Atlantis. You will get some great mail offers for future stays. The comps are liberal and I really enjoyed it there. It's the only place I stay in Reno anymore. My only complaint ever was when the valet bent my ignition key, but that was when cars still had ignition keys - a long time ago.

Atlantis is already one of my favorites for playing and eating. They will see some play from me this summer, there’s no doubt. I just didn’t know much about GSR. They may or may not become another favorite. Thanks for your response, mdenton.
The standard rooms at GSR are clean, but old and dated. Don't expect much except a place to sleep. A few years ago the plan was to renovate all of the rooms but then the economy tanked and it appears it will be awhile before they do much more. I've heard thru vpfree posts that there is no longer any fp vp at GSR, which used to have quite a lot. I'll drop in during 4th of July weekend to see, but I won't play if the paytables are bad. I agree that Atlantis has excellent vp and comps. Good luck!

P.S. and yes, it was originally the MGM Grand and the main theater had a big Vegas style production show - I think it was called Hello Hollywood Hello and the big finale included a passenger jet on stage. Then it was the Reno Hilton, then Bally's, and now GSR.
Thanks Fredo. I’m not much on luxury anyway. So, I’m sure it will be fine. I also appreciate all these responses. I’m learning a lot.
Can anyone comment on the food there? I used to go for the breakfast at The Lodge Buffet occasionally when it was Hilton. I wonder if it is still good. Also, is it a long walk to the rooms from the casino?

Any comments are appreciated. TIA,

Cyndee
The first machines are less than 50 steps from the elevators.
That's good to know, vetsen. Thanks
