Dirty Dining: Ellis Island

Here is an article and video report on the Ellis Island restaurant closure. Warning - this is not for the faint of heart (or stomach)

Well as the saying goes if you only knew what goes on in most restaurants you would eat at home. This one however has a lot of paperwork behind and will defiently keep us out of Ellis Island. Glad to see Inspectors doing their jobs. I can do without these types of infractions. Nothing is quite as bad a food posioning. Nuff said!!!!!!!! Have eaten there only a few times (maybe 3 or 4) over the past 10 years and usually breakfast but that's out now. They will not miss my business but on the other hand I will not miss any of the infractions either.
Now we know how they can afford all those great specials!

May I suggest that LVA remove them from the Top Ten Values until they have a couple more clean inspections...unless e-coli is a new value.

I was there that night with family from out of town. We were already eating and couldn't figure out why they had signs blocking the entrence/exit. My wife and I were at Fuego at Fiesta Henderson when their inspection happened a couple months ago too. That was interesting seeing people scramble hiding stuff!
Ate there Sunday am and food was great and both dining rooms were packed. It didn't seem the story effected business. Hard to believe they could recieve an A by the next morning. Makes you wonder.
Not defending Ellis Island but a lot of those things could have been very minor and not blaming the Inspector we do need good inspectors that take their jobs serious.

However each thing that they find wrong is a demit and somethings like
1. food stored a wrong tempature
2. utentils not is the correct water solution for sanitation
3. slicer blade dirty
4. chicken stored on wrong shelf in cooler
5. employee not wearing gloves for sanitation
and numerous other things can be corrected on site even before the inspector leaves the place. So if they had a lot of small violations it is possible to receive a A the very next day. If there were more serious violations they would have just simply shut them down. We were in Las Vegas from 10/30---11/6 and I guess they Health Department was out in full force and really was digging deep. The place I know for sure was Binion's. I heard some employees talking about it (ice machines and ect.) One thing you need to show the inspector the respect his job demands and you need to give him 100% of your attention during his visit. If not he or she can make your life a living hell before it is all over.
After reading the article it seems it wasnt merely a case of minor items adding up!

Food long past expiration date for example is hardly minor!
They were slipping, got laxed with all the business they made in volume and got sloppy. This is the best time to eat there because now they have a headhunter in there with white gloves looking for pimples on ants with a magnifying glass.

I love their specials and their prices and while the food has its ups and downs, the staff is very, very hospitable and I never, ever got sick there and don't know anyone who ever did. They get another shot with my business. Ill be there in December for Christmas. Karaoke until 3:00AM and pork chops and eggs with American cheese and potatoes and then that dreadful walk to Flamingo with a beer from 7-11 in tow.
