There days are numbered. There is no way you can safely serve thousands of people a day without the food being exposed to all of these diners. Food has to be exposed only to the cooks and severs which occurs in a restaraunt setting.
Short term many casinos said the buffets will remain closed. Long term is an open question.
im in the camp that believes they will be back...perhaps altered in how they work.
Lets put it this way. A buffet serving spoon is no more contagious than a slot machine button or dice at a craps table.
Or a elevator button or a escalator railing or a vending machine etc. Its almost impossible to keep everything you touch void of germs.
There has to be some risk - or we really will die.
There will be single serving bowls. NO TONGS.
Cooks and servers handle the tongs.

No doubt my husband will be instructing the tong-wielders: "Don't get cheap on me!" LOL.
The CDC now says the virus does not transmit over surfaces very easily. It’s highly unlikely you’ll get infected from touching something an infected person has touched.. Having said that buffets tend to have people in close quarters which dos seem to be the main way to transmit.
TI has announced its buffet is closing permanently. No loss there...but I hope others do not follow
Could be like the chow hall when I was in the service, point to what you want, it gets scooped on your plate. Cafeteria style
When I was young, I loved to eat at a good buffet. Now that I'm old, I don't eat beyond one plate of food. I've not been to a buffet in about a decade.
I believe buffets will make a return in the future.
