Pastrami Sandwich

Just finished reading the December newsletter. I have to agree with the Anthony that the pastrami sandwich at the Deli in Binions has gone downhill, both in quantity and quality.

With the Nov/Dec promo offering a $10 food coupon, I was looking forward to some good sandwiches. Very disappointed with the pastrami. The corned beef was somewhat better but nothing special. Their pre-packaged salads are decent and that is what Mrs. Don and I have been taking home.

What I couldn't fathom is how across the street, the Circa is charging, what is it, $22 for a pastrami sandwich and getting away with it. For that price, you shouldn't just get the best pastrami sandwich ever made by humankind--it should give you multiple orgasms while you eat it.

One reason why I don't tolerate Vegas casino food gouges is that I know that Vegas is a great food town and there are thousands and thousands of dining options available, very often at excellent prices, both within and without the casinos. I can think of half a dozen places right off the top of my head where I could get an excellent pastrami sandwich for $10 or less.

You see, the presence of the casinos and their (until recently!!!) myriad of cheap food options has forced local restauranteurs to up their game. No merely mediocre restaurant survives in Vegas.

Unfortunately, good quality deli is expensive.  People feel ripped off when they pay $20 for a sandwich but not for a steak, but quality varies tremendously; it's just that you can get a decent sandwich for $3 or 4.  That being said, the sandwiches at Saginaw (at Circa) are very good, but not absolutely top-tier.  Probably comparable to a Strip-style gouge, maybe not quite that bad from a price-to-quality standpoint.

As far as specifically a good pastrami sandwich is concerned, I had one a few months ago at Emerald Island's cafe for $8.99. With fries.

I should also mention the Capastrami at Capriotti's, which has over a dozen locations all over town. A 12-inch is $10 or $11, and you might not be able to finish it. Capriotti's is the bomb for just about any kind of sandwich you're looking for.

Have to agree with Kevin. Capriotti's is the best for great sandwiches. Love the "Bobby" and the mushroom cheese steak.
