I was stunned to read that downtown's slot hold was actually 1% higher than the Strip's. We know that the VP on the Strip absolutely sucks compared to downtown.
In fact, this seemed a bit fishy to me. So it turns out that as with so many other "raw" statistics, you have to dig a little deeper and consider context. The action that the Strip casinos get is much more skewed towards $1 and even $5 players. In contrast, the nickel and quarter folks tend to play downtown (or locals' casinos). Higher-denomination slots have a lower (often, much lower) hold than lower-denomination. So the Strip's lower slot hold (which is emphatically not the same as slot win) is due to people playing higher denominations, not because they want to shower love on their slot players.
